Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Gottlieb.
Jessica, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
For the past decade, I’ve worked as an online influencer. The term influencer wasn’t originally used. First, it was mom blogger, then just blogger, then influencer, and then I quit. I really felt like I’d just die of boredom if I had to talk about myself one more day and I wasn’t inspired to write about much else except cars. During the last presidential campaign, representatives from many of the car manufacturers disliked my support of Hillary and I found that my access to fleet vehicles dried up. Combining that with my daughter’s last year of high school and it was easy to want to take a year off.
But I was bored. So I partnered with my friend Stefanie Pollard and we decided that there was a place for women like us on Instagram. We’re solidly in midlife, will never be shopping at dreary stores, and wanted to share some of our fashion and finds. We launched @WeAreMidlife on Instagram and we’ve been having a lot of fun with it.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
This is my first time having a partner and it’s been much easier because of that.
Sometimes I really hate the internet. People (other women) leave comments calling us “babe” and I cringe. Not just inwardly, outwardly too. But I have to remember that it’s a compliment and that they don’t mean to be disparaging, and I have to remember that not everyone is a feminist or lives in LA. And that Instagram isn’t for politics (well, not our Instagram account anyhow).
And when I’ve wanted to quit Stefanie has told me to take a break. And when Stefanie wants to quit I tell her to take a week off. Nothing is ever a smooth road. My big learning curve has been in communication.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the We Are Midlife story. Tell us more about the business.
We Are Midlife is an Instagram based and web complimented community where women in their best years can celebrate their accomplishments. We don’t care about wrinkles or stretch marks, we don’t care if you are a mom or if you hate the idea of babies. We just care that you’re a woman who’s lived enough years to know how to celebrate the women around you.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Every time I work hard I get really lucky!
