Meet Jessica Estrada and Kyle Frazier of Hue For Every Man in Sherman Oaks

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Estrada and Kyle Frazier.

Jessica and Kyle, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I shared a work space with a barber and would constantly hear his clients, primarily affluent men of color, complain that they could not find grooming products that were made for their specific skin and hair types. After doing a lot of research in the retail environment, I found that although most retail stores had grooming products, they were NOT marketed nor were there healthier alternatives made for that demographic. This was a little shocking to me which led me to look into the ingredients these “leading” brands were using. After reviewing them, I discovered that they were indeed not as effective for men of color. So, I started to really take this as a challenge to create a product that could work not just for men of color but for EVERY man and all hair and skin types. After a couple years of research and trials I was able to develop a sample of our hero product, the pomade. That is when I wrangled Kyle into my plan of men’s grooming domination!

Has it been a smooth road?
It has NOT been a smooth road but definitely a rewarding road. Kyle and I have at some point performed every job necessary to build this brand. Everything from literally renting a U-haul truck and driving to the docks in Long Beach, Ca to pick up boxes of pomade containers shipped from China to pumping product. As an entrepreneur you need to stay committed to the core of your brand. We have encountered opportunities to place our products in main stream retail but it would have comprised who we are as a brand. For instance, a few retail buyers wanted to label our brand and/or products specifically for African American men and that is not who we are. As a brand Kyle and I specifically made our products with all-natural ingredients so they work for EVERY man regardless of hair type or skin color. We built our brand for a polycultural demographic. We weren’t willing to compromise our brand for certain retail placement so it has been slower growth than we anticipated but worth it as we have very loyal customers. Funding is another area we struggle with. Sadly, minority companies are the last to get funded. We know the lack of funding isn’t because our products don’t work or the way our packaging looks because we recently were given a Trendsetter award at Cosmoprof this past July. So that has been a bit frustrating. However, we are very excited for 2018 as there are a lot of new opportunities that have recently presented themselves.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Hue For Every Man story. Tell us more about the business.
The goal of our company is to deliver men’s premium grooming products that work for EVERY man. We want to provide a healthier alternative to products currently marketed to men of color while creating a great product that just happens to work for ALL hair and skin types. We want our products and brand to become a part of a gentleman’s lifestyle not something they hide in the shower. Our hero product has definitely been our pomade. It is made with all-natural ingredients so it is great for your skin, scalp, hair and beard. This was the first product we developed. We tested the response by sending it to 50 of the top barbers across the country. At first it garnered a lot of attention particular from athletes and celebrities because of the way it is packaged but then people started to realize it was just a great pomade that really worked. It doesn’t contain any of the harmful ingredients normally found in a pomade such as petroleum, we use primrose oil instead which actually stimulates hair growth.

We have recently teamed up with Master Barber, Julian Payne, and added a service component to a brand as well.

I think what really sets us apart from other brands is that our products really do work for ALL hair and skin types and we market our brand to a polycultural demographic. No matter what the color of your skin is or what type of hair texture you have…. our products work for you, in fact they were made for you!

I think that I am most proud of the fact that we didn’t give up. We started with 1 pomade and now have 5 products. Our line now consists of pomade, shampoo, conditioner, shaver therapy and an awakening mist. Developing a brand is like watching a child grow so to have 5 products now is amazing. I know that some people may look at it and say it is ONLY 5 products but it took a lot for me and Kyle to get here. One too many peanut butter sandwiches but definitely worth it!

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
If the men’s grooming industry continues to grow as it has the past 4-5 years, it will be one of the leading spaces in retail. This industry has had tremendous growth margins recently. I think the art of being a well-groomed gentleman is coming back around and we definitely plan to be a leader in the space.
