Meet Jessica Dubrowskij of Smile Darling Photography in Long Beach

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Dubrowskij.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started out taking pictures for my mother’s Event Planning business, I always enjoyed taking pictures of details rather than people. To this day they are still one of my favorite things to photograph. Eventually, friends and family members began asking me to take family pictures for them. It became so consistent that I decided it was time to get paid to do what I love! I officially started my business 2 years ago. I advertised on Facebook in the beginning. I honestly had no idea what I was doing but I did know I wanted to take pictures. I began with family portraits only, I refused to do weddings. After a year of working with so many great families and watching my business grow, I quickly decided to take the leap into wedding photography. It was terrifying! But one of the best choices I could have made for my little business. Watching someone get married, even if I hardly know them, makes my heart so happy. To witness so much love between two people and watching families come together brings me great joy and has 100% become the best part of my “job.”

Has it been a smooth road?
The road has been relatively smooth for me. At first there was a bit of a time management issue between being an entrepreneur and working full time, but I quickly fell into a routine.

So, let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Smile Darling Photography story. Tell us more about the business.
I am a wedding and portrait photographer. I only use natural light, i.e. the sun, and I always try to capture the personalities of each individual I have in front of my camera. Having your picture taken can be an awkward thing for some people. I pride myself on being able to get my clients to open up, thus ridding them of any awkwardness. I want our time together to be spent as friends hanging out so I can capture true feelings and candid moments.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Unfortunately, I believe there may be a decline in people that hire professional photographers, due to our cell phone cameras becoming so advanced. I hope I am wrong and that people will be willing to understand the difference between a professional photographer and a cell phone camera. I have already heard the comment “my phone is just as good as a camera,” and that hurts my heart. So much time, love and effort goes into capturing these special moments; something a cell phone can’t do.
