Meet Jessica Dell of Currensea Candle Co. in South Bay

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Dell.

Jessica, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
As a former corporate event manager, I often received thank you gifts from my clients. One day I unexpectedly received a delivery of flowers and a soy wax candle following one of my recent events. I was instantly intrigued by the smell of the candle.

I noticed that it had a rich fragrance that was not easily masked through the wax like most of the other candles I was more accustomed to using. I noticed that the wax was soft and burned clean, leaving no black soot. After burning the candle a few times, I decided I would attempt to create my own. One day after work I visited my local craft store and purchased the items needed to make a candle. I was pleasantly surprised to see that I (someone who is not typically good with arts & crafts) produced a scented candle. I tried making more candles, experimenting with different fragrance & essential oils, wicks, jars, and colors. About a year later, I officially launched my first business: Currensea Candle Co., luxury soy wax candles inspired by the Caribbean Islands. Today, we are almost six months old. We have a long way to go but are very happy with the recent success following our launch.

Has it been a smooth road?
For me, the hardest part of my business has been scheduling time to get things done while working a 9 to 5. Aside from the graphic on my logo, everything was done 100% by me. I designed the website, wrote the copy, took the product photos, handle the marketing, and of course, make the candles! Rather than going through a lawyer, I also registered my business and handled all of the paperwork on my own. Ensuring that these things got completed while working full-time was very much a struggle, but I was able to get it done.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Currensea Candle Co. story. Tell us more about the business.
Currensea Candle Co. is a luxury soy wax candle company inspired by the Caribbean Islands. I am half Jamaican, meaning half of my family are from or reside in Jamaica. I had a few recent trips to the island and created memories that will last a lifetime. Because I am unable to travel to Jamaica as frequently as I would like, I wanted to create a product and brand that would remind me of my favorite destination during long workdays, or cold winters (cold meaning 65 degrees and below! lol). I have yet to visit any other Caribbean Islands but certainly promote a Caribbean Island lifestyle and hope to cross some of the countries off my bucket list.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
Perhaps I am naïve, but I do not think that my industry is deeply saturated. I expect this to change in the next 5-10 years. As time goes by and technology advances, we will be able to learn to do just about anything over the internet. More people who have an interest in candles will probably find that they are relatively simple and cost-effective to make.
