Meet Jessica Castro

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessica Castro.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Traveling to South America sparked my journey into photography. I studied and refined my work at The University of Central Florida earning a Bachelors of Science in Photography. My first wedding client was my dental hygienist in college.

From there, I had family and friends either hire or refer me. I also do commercial and editorial work with fashion and entertainment clients. After graduation, I moved to Atlanta where I was working as a second photographer for weddings as well as growing my own business. Atlanta didn’t have much of a market for the fashion work so I decided to move to LA where I felt my photography would fit best.

Moving to LA was a big step I didn’t know anyone out here but my time in College working and in Atlanta had prepped me for the networking I had to do. I worked part-time, had an internship and hustled hard to meet people. Within my first two years of living in LA, I was able to go full time with weddings and find representation through an agency for my fashion work.

Now it’s been five years out here, and I still have clients from year one. My work has been on billboards, major magazines both nationally and internationally, and my wedding business is always growing. Majority of my work is word of mouth. I’ve worked hard to build organic and sincere relationships with my clients.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Not having money to start up in photography won’t stop you but it definitely makes it more of a journey. It takes a while to build up your gear and studio and technologies are always advancing and changing quicker than the money you are getting.

You and you learn quickly; this is a business like any other, so you have to use contracts to set guidelines for your services and payments. Managing clients expectations and being transparent always helps. It can get tricky starting and working under people. I’ve had a situation where I never got paid, or I chase payment for months. Now things are smooth, I have lawyers who review contracts and work with me.

Balancing life and work was a struggle along the way. Making sure to maintain a healthy lifestyle and not letting work always be at hand. All those things settle themselves, and you find a mostly smooth road.

We’d love to hear more about what you do.
I’m a wedding photographer, and my style is modern, romantic and authentic. Moments are candid using editorial and documentary techniques. Colors are vibrant with a mix of soft and moody lighting.

All work on my website reflects real-life couples I work with, no styled shoots. My images are not retouched or composited. They are processed for minor color/exposure/crop corrections. My approach is natural, I react to emotions, actions and the vibe of what is around me.

With nearly a decade of experience in wedding and fashion photography, I feel confident in capturing your natural beauty organically. When you hire me you’ll not only get all the experience but a lot of care as well. I take on a limited amount of weddings per year to provide an intimate and eased experience for my clients.
