Meet Jessenia Galvan-Lloyd of JNGL Spirit

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jessenia Galvan-Lloyd.

Hi Jessenia, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
As a little girl, I had a burning desire to help. I saw so much suffering around me and I just couldn’t make sense of it. I had lofty dreams of becoming a well-known film director and writer. I believed that I could use this medium to uplift underrepresented groups and give their stories a platform.

After graduating high school, I was so confused on how to make this dream a reality. I didn’t understand how to bring all of my big ambitions to life. I began to lose hope. I started to let my creativity go, making excuses that I was too busy with work to focus on my creativity. But the more I did this, the more I felt that my soul was turning to ash.

After moving to New York in my early 20s, my anxiety and depression were worse than ever. I was extremely isolated, broke, and I lost sight of my light. But it was also in New York where I would wander the streets and stubble upon story slams or poetry slams. I felt so inspired by people sharing their stories with such passion. This sparked something inside of me. I began to write again. First poetry, and then short stories after I discovered the Gotham Writers’ Workshop. I eventually moved back to California with a book full of original poems and a collection of short stories.

When I came back to California, I began making short films. For the first time in years, I felt like I was where I was supposed to be. I got trained in Transcendental Meditation and began a daily practice. I began to heal my unresolved trauma. I found an incredible therapist, I reconnected to my body through yoga, I learned to quiet my thoughts through meditation, and I used my writing as a way to release what I could no longer hold onto. I released the heaviness that I had carried with me for a lifetime. I felt so much lighter and I began to break down the walls that I had built up my whole life. When I felt ready, I began holding space for others to do the same. I began to share the tools that helped heal me and allowed me to bloom into who I am today. An optimist, a nurturer, a creative.

Today I am a Life + Health Coach who helps people get in touch with their true selves and create the life of their dreams. I help people who have goals but their limiting beliefs or lack of strategy is blocking them from achieving those ambitions. I am a Yoga Instructor who guides people to reconnect with the language of their body. I am a Meditation Guide who helps people reconnect with their life-giving breath and calm their busy minds. I am a Storyteller who uses my poetry, short films and photography to express my own truth.

I feel so blessed to do what I do. I am so grateful that my journey has led me to a place where I could hold space for others to discover and express the truth of who they are!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has by no means been a smooth road. I felt very lost and confused through a lot of my twenties. I had some very low points with my mental health. I struggled with anxiety and depression that I later discovered were side effects to C-PTSD. Healing and now feeling post-traumatic growth was not easy at all. In fact, it is the scariest thing I have ever done. To confront my shadow side, forgive myself and others, discover genuine Self Love has been incredibly worth it because of the joy and presence I feel now.

I also struggled to find work that made me feel purposeful. I worked in marketing, beauty, real estate, nonprofits, the restaurant industry, and the list goes on. I felt so dissatisfied at these jobs even though I was working so hard at them, often leading me to get promoted. I really struggled with the thought of disappointing people who were proud of me for having these jobs with fancy titles. But I was just so unhappy and knew that there was something else out there for me. I am so grateful to have my own business where I truly feel fulfilled and knowing I am making a difference!

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
The theme of Self Love and Self Care is the thread that connects all of my offerings. I truly believe that we have to take care of ourselves first. When our cups overflow, that is when we can show up as our whole selves to the causes we care about, work we do, and to the relationships we care the most about. I started offering virtual yoga + meditation classes at the beginning of the pandemic. I saw these classes as a way to contribute to what I thought would become the biggest mental health crisis of my lifetime. Those classes eventually became my business and brand, JNGL Spirit.

I host women’s circles, lead group meditations, work with clients privately on yoga + meditation, facilitate virtual Self Love/self-care events, and my newest offering is Life + Health Coaching. As a Life + Health Coach, I am able to work with people 1:1 to remove the obstacles so that they can fulfill their deepest desires.

I am proud of the fact that I meet people where they are. I try to keep everything very real and down to Earth. My goal is to avoid the spiritual bypassing which I have experienced myself through this industry. I am proud that I am creating space for real authenticity! I am the most proud of the transformation I see when working with my coaching, yoga, and meditation clients.

Networking and finding a mentor can have such a positive impact on one’s life and career. Any advice?
My advice for networking is to be yourself! Be true to who you are and the right people will gravitate to you. Your authenticity is your filtration system. If people don’t vibe with the real you, that saves you a lot of time. Let them move on and make room for your people.

While I don’t have a mentor, I always try to surround myself with people who I admire and who have qualities that I aspire to. I try to live by the saying “If you are the smartest person in the room, then you are in the wrong room.”
