Meet Jesse Davila

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jesse Davila.

Hi Jesse, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I grew up in Pomona, CA. I am a freelance photographer & videographer. I started shooting as a hobby but then made my way into working concerts and the music scene. Next came taking scenic photos on vacation, and most recently product photography. In my creative journey, I had a few ideas that fell short of succeeding including dropping out of college after seven years but photos and videos always felt right. Over the past three years, I have been building my portfolio as well as my clientele. My clients are usually individuals or smaller new companies which is my favorite part. A big help in my career was joining Dukevisions Multimedia. I started as an intern but now I am a part of the team. Working with Duke, owner of the company, has opened up many opportunities in my life as well as new relationships. I have helped on many videoshoots as a lighting assistant & behind the scenes photographer. Just recently, I started my online shop. On sale on the site is clothing that I have designed that ranges from sweaters, beanies, hats & more. I also have prints of photographs I have taken.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Challenges I face being a freelance artist are not that uncommon being a small business. Most of the money I generate flows right back in my myself (company). I do not get to freely spend just yet since I do have to market and grow my company. Focusing on improvements before the next project is important. Clientele is always a factor. Being both my clients & I are smaller businesses word of mouth is key in creating new connections. I have to make sure I concentrate on marketing in my budget. Social media helps with this as well but it can always be better.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
My skillsets include photography, prints, videography, & clothing. I shoot and edit photos. Photoshoots I specialize in include – Landscape, product photography, live events (concerts, parties, festivals), special occasions (birthday, graduation, anniversary) and more. Videos I specialize in are – Music videos, promotional videos, product videos, recap videos for social media, & live interviews. I sell prints of my photography ranging in sizes from 8.11 x 11 into 18 x 24 in. Prints only or framed photos are available. I also design clothing as part of my merchandise line. The line is to promote my brand but I do offer other designs influenced by Los Angeles sports.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
Risk taking is a part of being creative and certainly a part of starting a brand/company. Risks come in many different shapes and forms. It can be a risk where money is at stake or it can be a new idea you are afraid to express. The risks never go away but the way you react to them can change. Embracing the risk and the outcome will improve you no matter how it seems at first. I have taken a risk in both ways and have failed time and time again. It sucks but it is a part of the process. I certainly try to avoid financial risks but I am glad I went through it. I feel not many people get it right the first time and even if they did they had to be prepared for the risk.
