Today we’d like to introduce you to Jeremy and Mariko Wang.
Jeremy and Mariko, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My wife and I were working as full-time volunteers in New York when we found out that she was pregnant with our first child. So, we decided to move back to the Pasadena area where my parents were living.
Before heading back, while at work one day, my wife was cleaning with a friend whose father had a cleaning business back in Covina, and she suggested that we get in touch with him once we came back home.
So, upon our return, I worked with him in his floor cleaning business and learned much about cleaning from him. He then introduced me to his son, who also had a cleaning business, and he taught me different cleaning techniques that we still use today.
We’ve grown our company to serve many local Real Estate agents, property managers, and homeowners who are in the process of selling or purchasing their home.
Our family? Since our first daughter was born, our family has grown to include another daughter, and most recently, a son.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has not always been smooth sailing, but we’ve learned very valuable life lessons, one of which is the importance of excellent customer service and never burning bridges.
While an anomaly, there are some customers who are rather hard to please. However, we will do everything in our power to make sure that the homeowner is completely satisfied with the end product, or their money back.
A friend of ours taught us that there is always going to be someone cheaper than you. However, being confident in what you do and your work, you don’t have to always compete with others on pricing. If you can offer superior quality of work and service, you will succeed, and we’ve tried to live by that motto.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Jeremy and Mariko Wang Cleaning – what should we know?
We specialize in move-in/out cleanings and window washing in the greater Pasadena area.
We are fortunate that we have learned skills that allow having a superior cleaning system that is not only efficient, but green, eco-friendly, and kid and pet safe. Everything that we use at work, we feel comfortable using in our own home also.
Many cleaning companies send out a crew of anywhere from 2-4 people and charge by the hour. I’ve always felt that is unfair to the customer because every person works differently. That is why we do not charge by the hour, but by the project.
We feel our pricing system is not only fair, but also transparent and open. You know exactly what you are paying for before any work is started. After answering a few questions on our website, a ballpark estimate is provided via email. If agreeable, work is scheduled, and the day of, the exact price is provided before any work is started. Unless other than described, it will be within the ballpark range.
Our moral values are also what set us apart from other companies.
While at work one day in 2018, we were cleaning a 20th-floor luxury condo overlooking Staples Center in Downtown LA. Inside the laundry room, we came across a paper bag that was ready to be disposed of. Wanting to double-check its contents, we were shocked to find that it contained two envelopes that each contained $10,000.
Yes, that is a total of $20,000. These bags were nondescript and were ready to be thrown out. We returned them safely to the owner, for which they were very appreciative.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
After high school, I attended Cal Poly Pomona and majored in Ornamental Horticulture. Before and after college, I worked in the landscaping industry, even working for a period of time with Horticulture at Disneyland. My wife, on the other hand, after moving to San Diego from a little town in Japan, attended UC San Diego, where she majored in Earth Science. However, the education we received in school pales in comparison to what we learned hands-on trying to start a business.
We’ve met many Real Estate agents who have used our services and have also patiently taught us the ins and outs of what makes a home attractive to prospective buyers. So, we always have that focus in mind when cleaning. Being a husband and wife team, we are able to spot-check each other and help each other grow.
We are also grateful to our friends Jared and Joyce Avalos who work with us. We’ve worked together for a few years now, and we would not be where we are today without their help and support. Working together with them is a pleasure, and it’s a great working environment when you can clean houses with some of your best friends.
Having a network of friends who own cleaning businesses is also of tremendous help. One friend in particular, along with his wife, owns a cleaning business in Texas. We correspond often and share tips on how to improve.
Working and making as much money as possible is not our main focus in life. Every person who works with us also spends time each month volunteering their time for the community.
Having a well-rounded social, spiritual, and family life is important to us, and our work culture reflects our high moral standards and values.
