Meet Jeremy Mooney of Mooney Media in Torrance

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jeremy Mooney.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Because it was the perfect blend of creativity, music and cinema, I was always a big fan of music videos growing up. In high school it got to the point where I would remember shot sequences and angles of my favorite videos, and I could correctly guess which music video director was responsible based on the style and look. Pretty nerdy thing to be into, but it was something that luckily helped me establish a skill and career in the future. I studied film and digital media in Santa Cruz, primarily on the passion of music videos and other cinema, in hopes to learn enough and take a crack at it. A few years out of college, I learned a lot about the grind of the film industry, and that they weren’t handing out jobs – you had to work your ass off to prove yourself in any avenue in filmmaking. Fortunately, the boom of the DSLR camera allowed me to afford to purchase my own. I immediately shot a few videos for free to have a portfolio, and from that point on I’ve been working tirelessly on adding to my skillset and improve my craft. It has allowed me to live a life that is creative, and the skills has given me the ability to work full time on filming, editing, and producing, which I am truly thankful for.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road hasn’t always been the easiest, but I have realized to embrace them and it has given me a unique perspective that I am thankful for. After film school, there were stretches where I felt I wore out my welcome on my friends’ couches, and I didn’t have a place to stay – so I would find parking lots to spend the night in. This lasted sometimes months at a time. At times I would feel helpless because I felt I was competing in an industry where a lot of my peers already had a huge leg up – a decent support system, maybe they already had all the equipment they needed to work, or didn’t have to worry about an empty gas tank. I also knew that I had it in me to create, and if I took my time to pursue my craft it would all play out.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Mooney Media – what should we know?
My company is Mooney Media, a video production service, but probably mostly known for my music videos. But I also create video production for basically style of business – corporate, commercial, weddings, etc. I work full time producing corporate videos as well, and I have the pleasure of working on projects I enjoy outside of my work.

I’m most proud is that I have made a lot of connections and business through references and word of mouth and really pride on that because I feel that my works speaks for itself enough that it can garner more interest and work.

What sets me apart from other local music video directors is my endless desire to make are that the video being create looks as polished and sleek as possible – I love when people mistake the video for a much larger budget than it originally was – it makes me feel like I’ve accomplished the same work as a large crew!

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Passion. Wanting something and wanting to get better at something you care about can take you so far. Never being satisfied and wanting to do better than you did the last time I feel is incredibly important, especially in a field that’s constantly changing and growing.
