Meet Jeremy McGovern of Miracle League Los Angeles

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jeremy McGovern.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Jeremy. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I work in Television Production and as part of a show, I worked with the Miracle League in Kingsland Georgia. It was such an amazing experience that I wanted to volunteer with the local chapter in Los Angeles when I returned. I looked for a while, but couldn’t find a local chapter so I reached out to the national chapter in Atlanta who informed me there wasn’t a Los Angeles chapter. So I (rather ignorantly and flippantly) said: “Let’s start one!” They said “Great! We’ll send you our starter kit, good luck!”

And two years later we had our opening ceremonies in Baldwin Hills.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s been a huge struggle. Finding enough land to build a baseball field on in Los Angeles that someone is willing to donate to you is no small task. It was years of me spinning my wheels and making very little progress.

Then the Dodgers Foundation heard about us and reached out. They’ve been our biggest support and help since the very beginning. With them behind us, the wheels started turning much quicker.

We’d love to hear more about your organization.
Miracle League Los Angeles is the first of its kind organization in the Los Angeles area. We are a full 501c3 dedicated to providing a life changing experience for children with special needs by allowing them to play baseball on a field built specifically for them. With the support, passion and generosity of our partners at the Los Angeles Dodgers Foundation, the Cal Ripken, Sr. Foundation, the City of Los Angeles Department of Recreation and Parks, Security Benefit and the LA84 Foundation we have been honored to be part of the creation of Los Angeles’s first universally accessible Dodgers Dreamfield at Baldwin Hills Recreation Center.

Miracle League Los Angeles is dedicated to enhancing not only the lives of our players and volunteers, but our entire community by; Providing children with special needs the chance to play baseball regardless of the physical and/or mental barriers that would prevent them from doing so in a traditional league. Teaching understanding and inclusion by allowing children from the community to interact and build lifelong bonds with special needs children in ways that they might not otherwise have the opportunity to.

Promoting community support and involvement without league, our players and their families. Additionally, no child will ever be turned away due to their families inability to pay. Scholarships will be made available every season to cover any and all costs for players that they are unable to cover. In our first season 30% of our families received full financial aide to pay for their participation.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
The dedication of our field with our partners from The Dodgers Foundation, The Los Angeles Dodgers, LA84, The Los Angeles Parks Department and the Cal Ripken Sr. Foundation.
