Meet Jeremy Engel of Marzo’s Variety Show for Kids

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jeremy Engel.

Jeremy, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I did standup for about six years but stopped when I went to grad school for writing. After grad school, I worked as a private tutor for elementary school students and also got some writing gigs for children’s entertainment projects. I missed being on stage, but I didn’t necessarily want to get back into standup. I was talking about it with my wife, and she said, “When you worked at a bookstore, you loved dressing up as goofy animals and reading to kids. You like tutoring and writing for kids – what about stand up for kids?” That idea evolved into a variety show, where I emcee and do a few minutes of kiddo-friendly stand up to warm up the crowd, and then I introduce the other amazing performers. We’ve been doing “Marzo’s” about once a month for almost three years now, and it’s always a fun show.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s a lot of work to book acts, promote, market, advertise, organize, write stage material, come up with games, doodle original characters for posters and flyers, emcee, and produce an original show every month, especially with a full-time job and one-year-old son. But my wife is incredible, and even runs the tech booth and box office at shows. My sister-in-law is a marketing whiz who always has great pointers about promotion and outreach. And, while it does take a lot of work, I have to say that putting together fun, enriching live shows, getting an appreciative audience of kids and parents with a lot of repeat visitors from show to show, and being able to hang out and work with so many talented magicians, jugglers, musicians, storytellers, and other performers really makes it worthwhile.

Marzo’s Variety Show for Kids – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
“Marzo’s” is a variety show for kids that features a rotating cast of talented, family friendly magicians, puppeteers, musicians, jugglers, storytellers, and more, plus games and prizes. There’s kind of a funny synthesis where every show is both a professional, polished stage event and also a loose, freewheeling, almost experimental workshop-type performance, which is unavoidable when kids are the main audience and they’re sitting pretty much right on stage in a cozy little theater.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Seeing kids and families come back month after month, and hearing from them – and seeing firsthand – how much they love and appreciate the shows.
