Meet Jenny Starkey of Jenny Starkey Photography

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jenny Starkey.

Jenny, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I have always loved photography, but in high school I never took any classes because the prerequisite art classes intimidated me (something I totally kick myself for now!). So I started out on my own by just experimenting and having fun playing with photography. I started out playing with my mom’s old Canon 35 mm film camera and then eventually bought my own DSLR. I’ve always loved documentary photography and so from the start documenting the details of places and people I love has been a huge part of my photography journey.

It wasn’t until I became I mom though that I really started to learn and grow as a photographer both technically and artistically. Everyone tells you to sleep when the baby sleeps and instead I spent nap time on the computer soaking in every blog post or online tutorial I could find on how to take better photos.

The more I learned the more I fell in love with telling our story in photos and the more I wanted to take that and help tell other families story in photos as well.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The move from using my photography for my own enjoyment to making a business out of it seemed like a very natural progression for me and a way for me to bless others with something that I love and am passionate about.

In that though, I think there’s a stereotype out there that if you start out as a mom photographing your kids and then try to make a business of it then you are just another “mom with a camera.”

The truth of the matter is that I do find a lot of my inspiration as an artist in photographing my kids and our everyday life. The challenge then is to move beyond that stereotype, to constantly be challenging myself to grow as an artist and not let that perception limit my work.

Jenny Starkey Photography – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
I am a lifestyle photographer and focus primarily on photographing families and high school seniors. I work on location throughout LA and Ventura County – which I love because I get to photograph in some pretty amazing places and get to choose locations that are a true reflection of the people I photograph and the stories we are trying to tell through photos.

I am super passionate about the idea that each person and each family has a unique story to tell and that it can and should be told through photos. I want families to have photos that are more than just a pretty picture with everyone looking at the camera and smiling. I want them to have art that tells a story- their story. So most of my pictures aren’t about looking at the camera and getting a traditional pose, they’re about capturing interactions and relationships and stories. Our lives are crazy busy and I think that having pictures on display in our homes as beautiful art that tells our story helps us to remember what really matters.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
For each of the families or seniors that I photograph I meet with them after their session and show them their photos in person. This is one of my favorite parts of the whole process because I get to see the joy that is brought to each family as they see their story laid before them. My proudest moments have been when I get to hear people say things like, “This is SO us!” Or “This photo completely captures my daughter’s personality.” That’s when I know I’ve done what I set out to accomplish. It may be the art that I’ve created but it’s their story that I’ve been able to tell and capture for them. I love that.
