Meet Jenny Shih of Inversion Dance Studios

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jenny Shih.

Hi Jenny, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Back in 2008, I was still a few years fresh out of college and already struggled to maintain the corporate jobs I pursued with my Business Administration degree. It became clear that the corporate environment was not something I could thrive in. I jumped the corporate ship and landed into the arts. It was a difficult switch to endure. Despite my commitment to pursue my artistic passion, I had felt like I disappointed my parents and family at the time.

Inversion all started with the encouragement of a friend. Upon entertaining the idea of owning my own business, I started to believe in myself that it could be possible. It is amazing that sometimes it only takes one person to help inspire another to grow. The power of feeling inspired had helped form my deep “why”, the drive to keep momentum to build the business to launch.

In 2009, I had made my first sale. At that moment, I made a vow to myself to never forget or stop appreciating that feeling, that first win of a sale. This gratitude has helped me persevere through all the challenges that owning a small business brings.

To this day, the daily encouragement from my partner, colleagues, and clients creates a strong sense of support. My partner and colleagues who own small businesses too are confirmation that there is a great community who are generous to help when I need guidance or feedback in business decisions.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
One of the main struggles of surpassing the first ten years of business for me was letting go of the idea of what success “should” look like. That meant learning how to say no to a slew of ideas and propositions presented to me from all directions, balancing my personal life with business life, and choosing my priorities for the business.

The pandemic has challenged me how to work my way out from despair. I had discovered how to have faith to experience peace and joy in living each day.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
I was always pretty quiet (especially in the classroom) but I grew up with a lot of great influence from my two older brothers, so very early on I was really active in fitness and outdoor activities such as rollerskating, biking, and hiking. I love watching action movies and am an adrenaline junkie for sure.

My parents encouraged an active, healthy lifestyle from very early on and they always followed through on their ambitions for professional careers. I got in touch with my girly side early on too because my mom displayed beauty and femininity with grace.
