Today we’d like to introduce you to Jenny Quicksall.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Jenny. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I began my career in Management Consulting for a healthcare company here in Southern CA. The work was extremely analytical and I soon started to daydream about owning my own company and what that would look like. After a few years in Consulting, I attended graduate school at Pepperdine and received my MBA in Marketing thinking that perhaps this would open doors to other opportunities that are more geared towards entrepreneurship. Unfortunately, it did not and I remained in my consulting position for another year before I decided to take the leap and that’s when Jenny Quicksall Photography was born.
In the beginning, I focused on family and children portraits and I transitioned into weddings about a year into my photography career. I’ve always been enthralled with weddings ever since I was a child. It’s a day where everyone comes together to celebrate the union of two families, where everyone gets dressed up and dances the night away and where eating one, or two, or three, pieces of cake is acceptable!
As a parent, I get teary-eyed thinking about when my girls get married. They’re still 3 and 6 now, so I have time before that day comes, but I can’t help but feel the emotions of the parents as they walk their child down the aisle, or dance with them at the reception. It’s such an honor to be there to document and witness a memorable and special day for the couple and their families.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has definitely not been a smooth road to get to where I am today. In my 20’s I struggled a lot with anxiety and panic attacks. I remember my first episode happened while I was driving on the freeway and I had no idea what was happening. My heart felt like it was beating out of my chest and it scared me. For the next year, I went from one doctor to the next asking if there was anything physically wrong with me because I was convinced that what was happening was due to a physical ailment. I finally decided that I was going to just “deal with it” and when the panic attacks came that I would handle it, or to will it to go away. One year turned into three, five, seven, eight. Yes, it took me 8 years to finally say enough was enough and that I needed to seek help to help me through this. It was the BEST decision I made for myself and my family.
I have to say that photography had a major role in getting me through anxiety. I wrote this blog post a while ago, titled “How Creativity Gave Me My Life Back”, where I talked openly about my struggles and how photography became my therapeutic outlet.
The years of struggling with anxiety and my ultimate breakthrough from it make me the person I am today. I’ve learned to seek help when I’m in need, to lean on my support system and those closest to me, and to how to persevere.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Jenny Quicksall Photography – what should we know?
I specialize in wedding photography for the madly in love couples who are drawn to light, timeless and romantic photos. I offer wedding photography in Southern California and destinations worldwide.
I’m so beyond grateful that in the first full year of wedding photography I photographed 30 weddings and was published in numerous publications such as Style Me Pretty, 100 Layer Cake, Inside Weddings, Bridal Musings and many more. My work has also been printed in magazines such as Bridal Guide, Destination I Do, and California Wedding Day. It’s a bit surreal looking back on my accomplishments. I’m forever grateful to my family and closest friends (you know who you are!) for all their support and love. I truly cannot do this without them! I’m one blessed girl!
I think what sets me apart from other photographers is my personality and the ability to connect with my clients. I truly love people. I love getting to know my couples and their stories.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I would say it’s all about my persistence, resilience and ability to connect with people that have contributed to my success.
I’ve also been blessed with incredible people in my life that are my rock and given opportunities that have led me to amazing things. I’ve also been blessed with some “bad luck” that has taught me so much about myself, have made me who I am today and have fueled me to do incredible things with my business.
