Today we’d like to introduce you to Jenny Ho.
Jenny, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Sure, our story started less than a year ago when my husband, Wilson, came to me and said: “You know how you love letterboards? What do you think about selling them and not only that, but provide the largest variety online for people to select from?” My response was probably what every wife would have said, “Wait, you know what a letter board is?” He said, “Of course” and proceeded to show me all the research he had been doing for the past few weeks. How my husband got to know the in’s and out’s of a letter board more than I do is beyond me.
Being a complete pragmatist, I proceeded to list out the hundred reasons why he was crazy: we’re not business people, we don’t have a lot of money, we have a baby, I have a full-time job, we have a baby! Basically, my way of saying, “We’re comfortable so why shake things up?”
Wilson agreed. We don’t have money set aside just to start a business and yes, we do indeed have a baby, oh and three dogs (now four) too. But we also have a dream and we were not going to get there by being comfortable. Being comfortable is not going to allow us to pursue our passion and make a positive impact in the world, it is not going to pay off our dream home, it’s not going to allow us to experience the world outside of our neighborhood bubble, it’s not going to allow us to be present for every moment in our kids’ lives, and it’s definitely not going to build our dream farm where rescue dogs can run wild and free (seriously, we talk about this every time we buy a lotto ticket). Being comfortable is good, but being uncomfortable is where the magic happens.
Just like that, I was reminded of the determined bright-eyed guy I met at a bar nine years ago who would not take “no” for an answer. That same drive and forward-thinking mindset that won him a wife just won him a business partner.
And at that moment at our dinner table, Felt Good Vibes was born.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s absolutely been a wonderful experience, but definitely not an easy path. We learned pretty quickly off the bat that running a business is hard and running it with your spouse makes it quite possibly 10x harder. Wilson being the dreamer and I the pragmatist, we constantly drove each other crazy. He would come to me bouncing with excitement about a new idea and I would immediately shoot it down because it terrified the heck out of me. We would get into an argument, tears would ensue, silent treatments initiated, and next thing you know, we were texting each other about whether or not the dogs had eaten because, at the end of the day, we still lived together. It wasn’t until we learned how important it was to set ground rules and separation of responsibilities that we started to be able to work together. We compliment each other very well so it’s about finding roles and respecting them.
