Meet Jennifer Wilson of L.A. Social Karma

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Wilson.

Jennifer, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
There was no initial business plan, no backers, and no intention to keep going.

However, with a lot of hard work, a little bit of luck and a few key people that pulled us along here we are! We will celebrate eight amazing years in business this November.

The circumstances leading to the start of L.A. Social Karma began back in 2010 when, for the first time in my adult life, I found myself without a job. While I was in a panic searching for my next gig, a client of mine asked me to help him with Facebook. At the time I didn’t know anything about Facebook. I barely used my account, and truthfully the Facebook business account was a pretty new thing so the industry was still evolving at the time.

Within a few weeks, I realized I was really enjoying the work. What started out as only Facebook naturally grew to learn to also assist with other platforms such as Yelp, and email marketing. I read everything I could and attended every workshop I could find to expand my knowledge. I also called old clients I had known from a previous position and asked them if I could help them with Facebook as well.

It’s funny to me now but the call always went a little like this:
“I’m thinking of starting a social media business; I don’t know anything. I’ll charge you a little so I can learn”. Funny enough most of them said yes and before I knew it I had a little business with recurring income!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I’m not sure I would say it was a smooth road. It’s been a journey with many ups and downs. When we hit 5 years I was amazed because you always hear that most small businesses fail within the first 5 years. The truth is I love what I do, and because my business connects me with so many people, I really feel like I live in a small town.

One thing that has helped me a lot was when I was just starting out in sales, I remember a sales manager say to a group of us that I will take a hard-working sales person over a talented sales person because the hard worker will always surpass the talent one. I always keep that in mind. Our team works hard and delivery on what we promise to clients.

We’d love to hear more about your business.

What were you like growing up?
We moved around a lot as a kid. I don’t have much memory of what I was like. I played basketball and rode bikes, I loved art. My dad was a truck driver so I would spend summers and breaks on the truck with him. I think that gave me my bug for traveling.

I am also an only child. I am very independent to a fault and funny enough, owning a business has taught me I can’t do everything on my own.
