Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Weiser.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I am French-American. My dad is American and my mother is French. I was born in Paris where I was brought up and where I studied.
At 23 I moved to Los Angeles for a couple of years, then lived in Copenhagen, returned to live in Paris and finally moved back to Los Angeles 3 years ago.
I spent the last 12 years working in the movie industry. After the birth of my second child, I reconnected to my grandfather’s roots who was a leather shoe maker. As a child, I spent a great amount of time with my grandfather in his cobbler shop in Paris.
Bags have always been a number one accessory in my closet. I always gifted my friends with clutches and bags. Three years ago, I started Jenni Jane, a handcrafted leather handbags brand, playful and luxurious for urban wanderers like me. The brand started in Paris and is now based in LA where I now live. Jenni Jane is growing well in the US market but we are also selling online to European markets as well.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Entrepreneurship a smooth road?! Lots of struggles along the way.
I was devastated the day I received my first prototypes. There was such a discrepancy between my designs, what I had envisioned and the reality of the product. You have to find the right partners, the ones that are on your side, that will help you and that will create a product that is up to your standard with a pricing that will fit your numbers. A lot of people told me that I was too demanding and I could not find what I wanted. I researched until I was satisfied. It cost me delays, time and mental breakdown at times but you just need to stay focus on what you want and compromise only on things that you are prepared to let go.
A short list of challenges: A first faulty production in Italy, finding the right partners, moving the production to LA when I moved back here, having loyal customers, growing the presence in the US.
Please tell us about Jenni Jane.
Jenni Jane started with a blog on life, motherhood, cultural events and urban wanderings in 2011. It has then transformed into a handcrafted leather handbag and lifestyle brand. It started in Paris France and now is based in Los Angeles. Jenni Jane embodies a Californian spirit and a Parisian soul.
We are proud to have created a brand that is about to release its 3rd handbags collection. We have developed fun sets of pin back buttons to customize our bags, we have a beautiful line of scented candles that are playful with strong visuals. Our main clientele is based in LA, NYC, Miami, Paris, Brussels, Berlin, London, and Amsterdam. We are so proud to have customers in such cosmopolite cities.
What our customers love about Jenni Jane is that we are classic with a twist, we have playful items that brings a happy vibe to our customers and they can get creative with our products, especially with our handbags.
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I would have started this journey with a partner.
