Meet Jennifer Raphael Komsky of Levinson, Arshonsky & Kurtz

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Raphael Komsky.

Jennifer, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I come from a family of attorneys, so I always had that in mind and understood the challenges and rewards that the practice of law could provide. Of all the attorneys in my family, however, I was the first female (although there are a few more now!) I was born and raised in the San Fernando Valley and in fact, used to take the bus to the Sherman Oaks Galleria while I was in junior high in the 80’s. It is quite serendipitous that my office is now at the Galleria.

I began practicing law in the area of medical malpractice, then business litigation, before finding my niche with employment law. I have been practicing employment law almost exclusively for over 15 years. My current practice includes litigation defense, advise and counsel, litigation avoidance, workplace investigations, and trainings and workshops.

Has it been a smooth road?
Although there were plenty of women attorneys in my law school class and at my first firm, I have definitely seen drastic changes in the treatment of women in the workplace. I no longer get mistaken for the court reporter or receptionist! It really comes down to letting your work speak for you. I take pride in my longstanding client relationships. I feel like a partner in their business operations and am invested in their success.

Levinson, Arshonsky & Kurtz is a multi-disciplinary law firm that provides solutions for businesses. We specialize in business, real estate, finance, and employment law. Is our city a good place to do what you do?
California is challenging for any business since California is the most employee-friendly state in the country when it comes to employment laws. While the laws were drafted for a noble purpose, unfortunately, I often encounter situations where a current or former employee takes advantage of the law for a purpose that the laws were not designed to protect. Los Angeles has further enhanced many of California’s employment laws with their own progressive legislation.

Many employers are frustrated and discouraged by the status of state and city employment laws. However, employers can and should view these challenging obstacles as an opportunity to work with their employees to find solutions that benefit both the company and its employees.
