Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Dunbar.
Connecticut native Jennifer Dunbar had been living in and loving Los Angeles for more than 20 years when she was confronted with a double whammy of big life challenges. As if undergoing treatment for breast cancer wasn’t already stressful enough, she was also trying to manage the long-distance care of her aging parents back in Connecticut. Bringing her mom and dad to Los Angeles seemed like the right move for everyone.
But relocating them from their home of 50 years on the other side of the country was a big endeavor, and Jennifer needed help decluttering, packing and preparing the house for sale. While undergoing chemotherapy treatment, she began her google search to find a single relocation company who could handle it all, a company with diverse capabilities who could make the transition seamless. But there just wasn’t one. So, in 2018, Jennifer decided to launch doorsquad.
Happily, Jennifer’s health and family challenges are now behind her, and she loves to focus her energy on helping others with their relocation needs. Building on her Public Policy degree from the University of Southern California and her two decades as a sales and marketing executive in the food and beverage industry, she’s busy meeting new people and growing the doorsquad business. She loves sports (particularly USC basketball), the outdoors, cooking, live music at the Hollywood Bowl—and most of all, coaching and spending time with her sons Miles and Davis.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I can’t say the road has been smooth but I can say it’s been paved with so many valuable learnings and rich experiences.
Starting a business from the ground up is really, really hard! I absolutely love every minute of the journey and wouldn’t change anything but again, it’s hard.
I was wrapping up a five months chemo regimen and trying to start a business at the same time. Sounds crazy right. I honestly didn’t even think much about the hurdles ahead. As far as I was concerned, I was at the end of the hardest thing I had ever experienced in my life…fighting for my mortality, trying my best to care for my ill aging mother, and working hard as hell to remain positive and upbeat everyday to squell the nature fear my sons Miles & Davis lived with throughout this entire horrible ordeal. So for me starting a business, while obviously hard, it couldn’t be nearly as difficult as the real life challenges I faced.
There were days when I was so fatigued – all I could do was lay down. When I was re-energized I would work on my to-do-list. As an athlete I was very comfortable with setting goals and objectives and disciplining myself to focus on deliverables – starting doorsquad was another goal/objective. So I did what athletes do, I worked as hard as I could daily to achieve my goal.
Marketing a new startup business that is self-funded has probably been my biggest obstacle to creating brand awareness. I knew I had market fit early on but as a sales executive for over 20 years, I wasn’t quite sure how to market the business. I’ve tried several marketing campaigns, digital strategies, fliers, etc. but on a limited budget and w/o the support of an experienced agency, I’ve struggled to gain any real traction. The good news is while we are still trying to figure out the digital marketing strategy, my old- school tried and true Networking has paid huge dividends. Today 100% of our clients have come from referrals – the best free marketing a company can ask for.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Wow! What a great question.
Experience is the best teacher – right! So if I could rewind the clock with the knowledge I have today, I would have spent more time getting my arms around digital marketing. Now having said that, I honestly believe everything that I’ve been through and learned happened the way it was supposed to. It’s one thing to read about how to build a company and its another to physically do it with the real unpredictable life demands.
I love being an entrepreneur and I love my journey.
