Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Blushi.
Jennifer, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Growing up in Massachusetts, I was heavily involved in the theater community from a young age all the way up until college where I studied theater at Salem State University. It was there that I discovered that while I loved creating characters, I didn’t need to be an actor to do that. I’ve always been a bit of a jack of all trades, so if I wasn’t performing, I was backstage working in any other capacity to keep me engaged in production. I discovered my talent and passion was in hair and makeup design. It was the first time I was actually able to get my feet wet in executing a vision and telling a story through those details. So after college I packed up and moved out to LA to work in film and tv. Over the years, I’ve been able to work on some really awesome projects, but I have also seen LA life from so many perspectives and odd jobs I’ve worked while pursuing this career I love so much in a city I love so much. I still remain a bit of a jack of all trades, but that’s what keeps things interesting for me.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road worth taking is often the one you need to forge yourself. When I got my cosmetology license, I was so invigorated and ready to hit the ground running, but I just couldn’t get hired at a salon. And I would go on multiple interviews a day and just strike out every time. It weighed on me and I felt so discouraged and then I woke myself up a bit and realized I was trying to go down this path that seemed obvious but ultimately wasn’t the path for me. I feel most at home on set or in a theater or working with private clients for special events. That’s what I wanted. I just needed to make my own path to get there.
Please tell us about Blushi Beauty.
I work as a freelance hairstylist and makeup artist. My passion is creating a top to bottom look that is a fully formed expression. Something that tells a story. I love collaborating with clients as well as fellow artists. Recently, I worked on The Funny Dance Show for E! creating all the hair and makeup looks for host/creator, Justine Marino, which was a dream job because it gave me such creative freedom and Justine is such an open and fun person to collaborate with. I’ll always be a storyteller. Hair and Makeup is my medium.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
I am not sure if I have one singular memory that sticks out, but when I think of my childhood, I am flooded with memories of summers with my two best friends, Tanya and Malina. We grew up on a large pond and would get into so many adventures there that would often get us into trouble or some sort of situation we had to get ourselves out of. We were a bit mischievous, but we had fun.
