Meet Jennifer Aragon of The Green Place

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Aragon.

Jennifer, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
After working in retail for almost a decade, I knew I wanted to open a small shop of my own. I had started collecting plants a few years earlier and at the end of 2018, I was sure that a plant shop was the perfect small business for me. In April 2019, I took the first step and received my business license. I began researching and working toward my goal. It was difficult to find the time while working full-time in management and having a family. I did what I could, even if it was just watching a YouTube video on something I had a question about, such as business or marketing. In March 2020, like many other people, I was furloughed. After being locked up for over three weeks, I thought about the excuse I had in the past, “I don’t have the time to work on my business.” It would be a shame not to take advantage of this time off work to invest time into my project. 

I immediately started researching distribution companies, wholesalers and nurseries. I spent hours applying to shop and work with these companies. In April, we made our first plant purchase and our first Instagram sale. I posted on the stories and people would DM their list of plants they wanted. We offered contactless pickup and free local contactless deliveries from San Clemente to Eastvale up to Pasadena and everywhere in between! Buttercream Bakery hosted our first outdoor pop up for their Mother’s Day event and it was successful! From then on, we held pop ups in our home driveway once a month and sold through Instagram in between. By July, we were looking for a small industrial workspace and stumbled upon a retail location. We weren’t planning on having a retail shop but jumped at the opportunity and decided that was the next step! The Green Place grand opening was August 15, 2020 and it’s been an amazing ride!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The struggle has been finding a way to run a small business while trying to navigate the pandemic. We take every precaution and do our duty with keeping our shop sanitized and our clients safe!

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about The Green Place?
We are your neighborhood friendly plant shop! We receive shipments 2-3 times a week and every plant is handpicked specifically for our shop and clientele. We’re known for our super-friendly service, our “home-y” yet “jungle-y” vibe, our selfie stations and of course, our amazing plants! The goal is to offer classes starting this summer on several topics such as repotting, propagating and more plant-related fun! The vision for this shop was to be a place of community and joy. We want people to walk in and feel genuinely happy and leave in a better mood than when they entered. I’m proud of the community we’ve built and the friendships we’ve made with our locals and regulars. I’m proud of my staff and the hard work, love and care they pour into our plant babies and into our customers every day.

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
Don’t make excuses. Don’t procrastinate. Don’t wait. Believe in your vision and let your imagination soar. You don’t have know how to do everything, you just have to take the time to learn. Ask questions and listen carefully to people who have the correct answers. Read or listen to books on business or on the subject that you’re interested in. Stay loyal to the people that help you along the way and keep your integrity high!
