Meet Jenni MacLeod of The Blushing Bird in Toluca Lake

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jenni MacLeod.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Jenni. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I wasn’t a little girl who grew up dreaming about my wedding day. In fact, I thought weddings were kind of lame. A formulaic and stressful obligation instead of a personal expression of love. I always imagined that if I got married I would elope, but then I met my Scottish dream man and the idea of a party with our favorite people in Edinburgh to celebrate our commitment was just too good to pass up. So we fully embraced it, threw the party of our lives, and it ended up being truly the best experience of my life. A 3-day bash soaked in laughter, champagne, dancing and tons of ugly crying. From that point on, I’ve been a totally unapologetic sappy wedding convert.

The only thing that was missing from the experience was the kind of bridal shop that appealed to a bride like me. Almost every wedding dress I tried on felt stuffy and weird, I wanted something soft, romantic and authentic to my person style. I also wanted to try a bunch of crowns and veils and shoes and jewelry to make the look my own, but the shops I went to didn’t have much to choose from. So the concept behind The Blushing Bird was born. A stress-free, cozy bridal experience with gorgeous gowns and accessories by indie designers to put the look together head to toe, for the woman who defines her own style and doesn’t mind breaking a few rules.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Starting a business from scratch is no easy feat. Especially considering I had literally no idea what I was doing. My background is in the entertainment industry, and while I have a strong sense of style and genuine passion for working with brides, it was a big learning curve.

But I think what I didn’t know helped to build the nontraditional quality of the shop that our brides respond to so well. I wasn’t coming at it from a “this is how bridal shops are” point of view, but a “this is how I would want a bridal shop to be”.

So, let’s switch gears a bit and go into The Blushing Bird story. Tell us more about the business.
First, it’s about the experience. It’s not a bride factory where we get em’ in and paid and out as quickly as possible. I love sharing the creative experience with the brides and want them soak up every joyful moment.

We’re also obsessed with really specialty pieces that you can’t find anywhere else in LA. I find indie designer gems from all over the world like Emmy London in the UK, Jannie Baltzer in Denmark, & For Love in Canada, and Mignonne Handmade in France,

Nothing makes me happier than when a bride puts on a dress or headpiece and you see something happen to her…it’s like her heart lights up and we all know “this is it”. This is what she will wear on the day she commits to the love of her life. I cry with my brides a lot, if you can’t tell. 🙂

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I was lucky to have saved some money to start the business. It was a little nest egg but enough to get the shop going without having to take out loans. It’s so funny when people are surprised that I opened the shop myself, even sometimes saying “so did your dad or husband fund the start up?”

But my husband has played an important role, and I’ve been super lucky to have his support. He’s the man behind the scenes building and painting dress racks, shipping shoes off to brides, and making me tea when it’s been a long day on my feet.

I also have a great friend who owns a children’s clothing boutique called Sassafras who has given me TONS of advice…and is still ready via text anytime I run into a business challenge I need her help with.
