Meet Jenni Glancy of JUNK in Tarzana

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jenni Glancy.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
JUNK was born in my kitchen in the summer of 2010. I had just come back from my favorite thrift shop with an amazing stash of vintage beaded necklaces, floral tole trays, and some cool depression glass candy dishes. I was so thrilled with my fabulous finds when it struck me how amazing it would be if I could share all these great pieces with the rest of the world. I decided right then and there that it was time to start a business. I came up with a name, designed my own business cards, and my JUNK business was off and running.

I started selling my wares in a local gift store in my neighborhood, and it was a big hit. Soon, JUNK had become a recognizable name and had a small following in the Valley. During this time, I became a vendor at a local flea market and set up a booth a couple of times a year. I also set up shop at my kids’ schools’ holiday boutiques. Other fabulous businesses in the LA area started carrying my JUNK, as well. For me, It was all about spreading the JUNK love. I designed a Facebook page and started a blog. Displaying my pieces and meeting other junk lovers was my favorite part, and I started to fantasize about maybe having my own shop one day. After checking out a vacant studio space in Tarzana, I fell in love, and I finally took the leap and opened The JUNK Studio in the summer of 2017.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Luckily for me, I had a TON of help and encouragement when starting my business. I enlisted a really business-savvy friend to help me set up all the logistics like inventory, bookkeeping, insurance, etc. Plus, I am blessed with a supportive family and loyal friends and JUNK customers who cheered me on the whole time and were waiting in line when I opened my doors that first day. They were all there to support my new endeavor, and I am so grateful for them.

The only real struggles for me in the beginning were internal. Am I good enough? Am I smart enough? Am I talented enough? What does The JUNK Studio have that all these other vintage shops don’t? Do I get a lunch break? And then I thought to myself, who cares? I love it. I love JUNK. And if I love JUNK, everyone else will love JUNK, too!!

JUNK – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
The JUNK Studio is a hidden gem located in a funky industrial space filled with fabulous vintage finds, unique gifts, home decor, JUNK art, jewelry, and more. In addition to the vintage collections, I have also incorporated new products from “makers” all over the country, most of whom are small businesses themselves. Not to mention the fabulous bags, quilts and robes from India, and a great selection of greeting cards. All these items put together really make The JUNK Studio a one-stop-shop. And gift wrapping is my specialty. Just saying.

What I am most proud of and what I really think sets The JUNK Studio apart from other retail stores, is the fabulous customer service and friendly atmosphere. The studio started as a place to sell all my JUNK and has blossomed into a haven for friends, family, strangers, and fellow junksters to meet, exchange ideas, get inspired, shop, and build friendships. What started as a passion project of mine has taught me that there is SO MUCH MORE involved in running a successful business than I ever imagined. It’s about welcoming people into my world who have curiously wandered in… and about the feeling of joy and community I want them to walk away with every time they leave. And, of course, fab JUNK.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
My idea of success is every time I get a repeat customer. I feel like I must be doing something right.
