Meet Jenna Rainey of Mon Voir in Irvine

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jenna Rainey.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Jenna. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I didn’t start truly painting until my husband and I moved back home from Chicago in 2012. In the midst of the move, we wound up with a box of art supplies that did not belong to us! I picked up the brushes, started painting and fell in love. I started incorporating calligraphy more because I had friends and family ask me to calligraph their invitations, and I realized I had a talent for it! For the last 5 years I have spent countless hours studying on YouTube, SkillShare and other websites to perfect my craft and get better and better. I taught myself how to mix paints, calligraph, design, photoshop, use illustrator, how to scan an image, run my business, social media, the list goes on! Because of my tenacity and ambition to succeed, I was able to create an incredible client base through social media and referral!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Starting your own business is never a smooth road and I absolutely made mistakes and learned some lessons along the way. I believe every business owner needs to go through this in order to learn and grow! I found that communication is absolutely key to keeping things going smoothly, especially if you’re in a profession where you are working with people. But I am really lucky, I love what I do. I get to help my clients create invitations for the happiest day of their lives, I help people find their creative side by teaching watercolor and calligraphy, I am officially a published author so that I can help anyone around the world work on their watercolor skills. I get to have a lot of fun and I am incredibly passionate about what I do. I think that is so important to not only keep a business going but to keep it thriving!

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Mon Voir story. Tell us more about the business.
I teach workshops, I sell watercolor and calligraphy booklets and watercolor kits on my website, I teach private lessons and classes, I paint, design, illustrate, calligraph all of client’s wedding invitations, I wrote a book called Everyday Watercolor that comes out this fall and I am already working on my next book! I really am focused on social media and creating visually appealing images for my followers.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Entrepreneurship doesn’t necessarily provide luck. What people don’t see is the 5:00am wake up calls, painting till midnight, designing and photoshopping, press checking, client communication, traveling, time away from family and friends, etc. Because of the amount of stress I put on my body the last 5 years I developed some health complications. Because of this wake up call, I have finally been able to find a work life balance. I make sure to meal prep so that my body has energy and take yoga 5 days a week to calm my mind and relax. With that being said, I do feel very lucky that although sometimes things can get really crazy, I absolutely love what I do. I feel lucky that people love my work and want to hire me! I feel lucky that I’ve gotten to work with some amazing people from all over the world. The list goes on!
