Meet Jeff Vernon

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jeff Vernon.

Jeff, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I am a native of Los Angeles. My dad was an actor and my mom worked at the studio as a script girl. From the time I was a young boy, I discovered that I could draw very well. By the time I was sixteen, I was illustrating posters for movies!

After I graduated from Art Center, I started working for advertising agencies in Los Angeles.

I worked for the agency that handled ATARI, and I designed the PAC-MAN package.

After many years of working at agencies, I began freelancing and have illustrated over 30 children’s books.

Wow – illustrating 30 books is no easy feat!  We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
When computers entered the graphic design field in the late eighties, I went back to school and learned all the programs! I had several designer friends who decided to leave the field, but I added computer skills to my list of resources. It was challenging at first but has helped the business tremendously.

It’s inspiring to hear how ready and willing you were to learn new skills when the times required it.  What else should we know about your work and career?  What are you most proud of?
I am very proud of having illustrated over 30 children’s books, most available at Amazon. In addition to the books, I have designed many book covers, websites, and posters for a wide variety of clients.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I plan on continuing to illustrate children’s books and am also designing more websites. There are still some websites out there that are not “phone friendly.” I love making websites that are responsive to the needs of our phones.
