Meet Jeff Losey of Lantern Electric

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jeff Losey.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Jeff. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I started Lantern Electric in 2003 and Incorporated in 2012. I started things out with the Mission Statement that “Good work would be performed with a longer than average warranty and this would NOT be at the cost of my employees.” I have always paid more than other companies; most companies start their payroll at $10-12/hr. and I have always paid $15+ an hour. My goal is to have successful employees that have healthy productive lives. We started out with electrical service and we found that this was a losing battle against previously performed work that in most cases was not necessarily the best. We graduated to new installations in a very short period of time with a good reputation of no corners cut safe electrical installations.

We started out with my personal Toyota Tacoma and this truck is still in service for our companies. We have a small fleet now and couple warehouses that house various products for lighting and electrical. We offer partnership to those that warrant the occasion and always do our best to foster this type of atmosphere. There are several success stories within my story as we have now grown to have several companies; two here and several abroad.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
We have seen our fair share of obstacles between fraudulent companies offering services that they don’t actually know how to perform on to just outright thieves!

We invested in a partnership and the individual took all of our investment ($130,000) and have yet to return a dime! We have had to file lawsuits to get companies to pay their bills… Yup, we have been through the ringer and just keep our heads up and go go go!

We’d love to hear more about your business.
My primary company is Electrical Contracting and we perform commercial/industrial installations. We specialize in power provision and heavy-duty lighting needs. More than 85% of our business is repeat or referral.

What were you like growing up?
I grew up in Grand Rapids, MI and it was a grim existence without much to look forward to but for likely you would be going to prison. The teachers didn’t work real hard to educate us…there were some gems in the rough if you will…Mrs. Brown in 3rd Grade, she was incredible. I was the youngest in quite a sizable family. I didn’t finish High School after transferring through several different HS, I ended up getting a GED. Went to Ferris State University and some others… I grew up training Martial Arts with Master Sonny Garber and Tadashi Yamashita. We would go to tournaments every weekend as far as NY or FL. Even from an early age, I always liked working with my hands but loved using my wits to improve things and make more with less.
