Meet Jeesin Lui of Larchmont Traditional Medicine

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jeesin Lui.

Jeesin, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My path towards Asian medicine began nearly 30 years ago when chronic pain led me to acupuncture as a last resort. Despite my intense fear of needles, I was amazed at how calming the treatment was, and I realized that I had not felt that well in a very long time. Over the course of several months’ treatment, my sleep, energy, and overall well-being improved dramatically, and my transformational healing became an inspiration for wanting to help others in the same way. After earning my Bachelor’s of Science in biology, I moved across the country to Los Angeles to pursue my Master’s degree in Traditional Oriental Medicine, where I met my future husband and partner Jim Bloomfield. Nearly 20 years later, we have established practices at Larchmont Traditional Medicine on Larchmont Boulevard. We strive to give the local community the best of what Chinese Medicine has to offer, from acupuncture and cupping to herbal therapy, as well as dietary and lifestyle recommendations.

Our desire to help others and give back to the community extends beyond the clinic walls. Several years ago, we had the opportunity to join 50 other families in founding a progressive language immersion elementary school committed to providing a high-quality education to a culturally and economically diverse population. Seeing the smiles of these children whose lives have been transformed for the better is one of my greatest joys. As a mother to 3 youngsters myself, I am passionate about educating them on the value of healthy living, and we regularly bike around town and focus on healthy eating for wellness. A recent mission of mine has become teaching others the value of using food as medicine, and I enjoy holding cooking classes in my home to educate others on the benefits of healing with whole foods. Every day I am in continual awe of the wisdom of the human body, and it is truly fulfilling to follow my passion while helping others on their healing journey.

Has it been a smooth road?
I have learned over the years that life is a journey of ups and downs, and it is the challenges that I struggled with most that I look back on with the most pride and feeling of accomplishment. Starting our practices with no start-up funds and little business experience was daunting to say the least, and when I found myself discouraged, all I could do was trust that my passion for natural medicine would pave the way to the life I envisioned. This faith emboldened my naturally introverted self to share my love of this medicine to others, and slowly over the years my practice grew through word of mouth. Several months ago, a severe back injury sidelined my ability to work and forced me to reevaluate the care that I was needing for myself.

Through dedication and hard work, I was able to overcome the odds, healing myself with natural medicine when surgery was the recommended option. The experience of being a patient once again was humbling but so invaluable in being reminded of how to understand the pain and despair of those who come to see me. It also renewed my already strong belief in the body’s innate ability to heal, and it is with utmost gratitude that I am able to do what I do. I have come to embrace the challenges that come my way as a chance to learn and grow as a person and as a practitioner of this amazing healing modality.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Our business, Larchmont Traditional Medicine, is a family acupuncture practice devoted to providing the community with an individualized and holistic approach to natural medicine. In addition to acupuncture, cupping, and herbal medicine, we utilize knowledge in body mechanics, nutrition and psychology to treat various health issues from all angles. In our practice, we know the importance of spending time with our patients, and we strive to address not only the symptom but the root cause of the problem in order to achieve long-lasting results. We pride ourselves in providing the best care possible for our patients with gentleness and compassion and are proud to call Larchmont Village home all these years.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Los Angeles, being the very diverse and big city that it is, is a great place to practice holistic medicine. We have so many different populations that can benefit from these modalities, and the more options that people have to experience the amazing effects of this approach, the better for the health of our community in general. Also, the culture here is more open to alternatives, and I believe there are always opportunities to open people’s minds on how to deal with everyday health issues from a holistic standpoint.
