Meet Jaymee Reiss

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jaymee Reiss.

Jaymee, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
In 2011, I went to Cosmetology School where I realized my passion was more in makeup that hair. 2013, I started at Empire Academy of Beauty with Donna Mee. I graduated from there after completing a nine months course in Subjects like beauty, business, print, commercial and bridal. While I was there, I was also working to build my portfolio going things such as lookbooks, fashion shows, wedding and assisting other makeup artists.

I started working for Benefit Cosmetics in Newport Beach after being there two years I moved to Dior also in Newport Beach (they’re both owned by LVMH) I managed that counter for one year. I got married & had a baby in 2016 and decided to take a break I was pretty burnt out from retail/beauty so I was only really working with people I knew. But in 2019, I helped someone in a bind who’s makeup artist canceled a week before and realized how much I missed it! Quickly just from making an Instagram/beauty page business starting pouring in being booked at least a job a weekend! Now I’m booked even as for as May 2020.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t been smooth by any means! I’m the hardest part is having the guts to put yourself out there and try to get a business going all by yourself. For a long time the thought of the next job and making a living was scary which is how I found myself in cosmetics (that was never my plan) and I felt stuck there with a steady paycheck. I really am thankful for my husband who pushed me to take the chance and he would take care of our family & kids so I could have something for myself that I enjoy. Which is really what being a makeup artist is for me, a creative outlet and time where I can do something I really enjoy.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Jaymee Reiss Beauty – what should we know?
I started Jaymee Reiss Beauty to focus more on Bridal makeup but it has even evolved past that in only a few short months. Helping wedding guests, business people dances etc. I offer lessons as well to help people feel good about themselves at home by recreating a look I gave them using more simple steps. I think what sets me apart is I really want to help enhance what they already have, a more gooey natural look maybe to bring attention so a special trait they like a lot; eye color, cheekbones, eyebrows whatever it maybe be. Instead of maybe using heavy makeup to completely change someone’s looks.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
A big part of my success, I believe is really listening to my clients having a consultation during the session to make sure everyone is on the same page. I also like to communicate what I’m doing through the process so that they trust me.
