Meet Jay and Jodine Penev of Fine Feathers Kombucha Co. in Long Beach

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jay and Jodine Penev.

Jay and Jodine, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
We launched Fine Feathers in 2012 out of love for tea and Kombucha fermentation. We dedicated ourselves to crafting Kombucha on a small-scale with emphasis on sustainability and an undying commitment to quality. Our approach is merely an extension of our personal philosophy when it comes to food and business: “Keep it quality. With integrity and responsibility.” We built and launched our dedicated Kombucha brewery in 2014 in Central Long Beach and have been serving thousands in our macrocommunity through that location since.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Certainly not. The struggles are sewn into the fabric of small business. Our experience has gifted us with challenges in the permitting, building and licensing to expansion pains and everything in between. Basically, every step along the way has had a challenge integrated into it. I think with small business, you have to learn to enjoy and appreciate every moment, because at the end of the day, it’s just plain tough. It may be fun, but it’s also tough. It may be your dream, but it comes with a price. These challenges, however, do make you more resilient, mentally sharper and build character too.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Fine Feathers Kombucha Co. – what should we know?
We make Kombucha that puts emphasis on tea, being that kombucha is a tea-based ferment. Our flavors are inspired by high-quality teas that we feel strongly about. From the very beginning, the intention behind Fine Feathers Kombucha was to be synonymous with “quality” and to craft kombucha that goes way above and beyond the expectations and status quos. Our signature small-batch kombucha-making process, unsurpassed customer service and customer appreciation, and the uncompromising integrity in our ingredient sourcing, production, and sustainable business practices attest to our commitment to serve those intentions. Our continued commitment to Quality-Above-Quantity and core belief that exceptional kombucha starts and ends with only the highest possible quality teas has solidified our direction as a commercial producer and we continuously strive to ferment with more exclusive and rare teas.

Since our inception as a company, our focus has remained on staying true to our local roots and growing sustainably/responsibly. We wholeheartedly believe that our approach is the ONLY way for our company to continuously provide the same level of quality in our products, the most direct way to positively impact our community, and to inspire sustainability, innovation, environmental consciousness, and ethical business practices.
