Meet Jay Levin of EQuip Our Kids Campaign and Big EQ Campaign

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jay Levin.

Jay, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
The story starts with me as a young NY journalist fascinated by everything that looked like it would make a positive difference in people’s lives and communities and the world. Whether it was personal, economic, political, social justice-oriented, creatively oriented, education-oriented, health-oriented, environmentally oriented or otherwise.

So I became the “alternative journalist” at a NY daily newspaper and covered all these areas of interest. Later I started the LA Weekly so I could bring that sensibility to Los Angeles, One of the areas we covered was the human development movement, which I saw and see as helping make the inner changes necessary for genuine progress out of pain and conflict. I had started covering the movement at 21 years old when I wrote a series in NY about modern therapy techniques being used in addiction treatment. It confirmed for me two core beliefs I have had through my late teens and adult life. One, that the world is an effect and the cause is how we are maltrained to deal with our own inner and out relational lives. The other belief was that almost all human suffering and conflict results from lack of these skills that collectively form emotional intelligence.

Because I went to so many workshops as a journalist, I acquired a lot of ability to teach these skills myself and so started a part-time coaching practice for the sheer pleasure of working individually with people or couples or executives or teaching workshops of skills.

Collectively there have been three major streams in my career life. Journalism, which morphed into running or saving six media companies. Starting nonprofits that had alternative a pproaches (six of them). And the coaching.

The last two nonprofits I started are relevant to now. Both have the mission of getting emotional intelligence and social and life skills learning in all schools, not just the 10 percent that thrive with them. This is the key skillset that can end the cause of most human suffering and violence (including create the mindset that will bring down the nuclear missiles pointed at our heads and the mindset that might save us from eco extinction).

One is the California Social Emotional Learning Alliance comprised of educators, program providers and community organizations. I recently passed the executive director baton to one of the state’s most respected educators. The other is a national advertising, marketing and PR awareness campaign to mobilize parents, businesses and the public to support EQ curriculum in all schools, with huge benefits to students, families, communities, workplaces and human life on earth, This skillset training in an historic game-changer humanity has needed for eons so the world we co-create is wiser, saner, more loving and co-supportive and co-creative.

Has it been a smooth road?
Struggles included my own personal development issues – learning my way out of same ineffective ways or reacting that the society propounds. I am still learning. Others were linked to the challenges of not working on the mainstream but always being affected by its mores and means,

So, as you know, we’re impressed with EQuip Our Kids Campaign and Big EQ Campaign – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
I have two businesses, The dominant is the EQuip Our Kids campaign. This taps into my gifts for creating media that grabs people”s hearts and mind and spirits/souls. That creates new vistas.

The other business is my coaching, which taps into my ability to see clearly, cut to the root causes, be deeply caring for clients, and develop and teach skills to positively alter client’s sense of self, their careers or businesses and their relationships. To this, I bring a God-given gift for understanding the true soul nature of an individual and the guidance on how to align with it for the best of life experience.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
Like = The multiplicity of cultures, subcultures and humanity, including some of the most evolved people in the world.
