Meet Jason Lam of Story Bikes

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jason Lam.

The idea of Story Bikes started when two of the founders were renting electric bikes for fun in Venice and had a great time riding them around. However, they were really ugly, heavy, and bulky. After doing extensive research, they realize the perfect e-bike didn’t yet exist. They decided to design and manufacture their own.

One of the founding members was a professional cyclist and knew what would make an up a great bike. The search began to find a manufacturer, and after lots of different prototypes, they were able to find a design that worked. Through lots of riding and redesign of the course of a year, they were able to perfect the bike. The final prototype is sleep, stylish, and affordable.

However, from the beginning, the founders knew they wanted to create a product that would have a global impact. After spending lots of time traveling and looking back at their childhood memories, they realized the importance of mobility, and it’s the potential impact on lives. Story Bikes decided to partner with World Bicycle Relief who created Buffalo Bikes that are distributed to children within developing countries.

For every Story Bike sold, they will be donating a Buffalo Bike to these children who need it to get to school. These children typically walk anywhere from 5-12 miles each way to school taking hours. With a donated Buffalo Bikes their times is cut down to almost under an hour. This is something that the Story Bikes team members saw first hand as they went to Zimbabwe for a distribution trip this past Thanksgiving 2018.

Once the prototype went into full production, the team was able to start selling their bikes and achieve the honor of being on Oprah’s Favorites list this past Christmas.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The road has had a few road bumps here and there. We’ve struggled to keep up with demand and manufacture the bikes as quickly as we’d like to. However, we’ve started to learn from our mistakes and excited for 2019!
