Today we’d like to introduce you to Jason Holmes.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I began my photography career in 1995 working for an interior design photography firm. From there, I began building my own clientele utilizing what I had learned, I also began branching out into the fashion industry.
My passion besides photography, however, has always been history, so in 2002 I decided to merge them both and start Retrodolls, my retro boudoir studio providing classy, pinup style photos. Our company goal is to help empower, inspire, and raise up women of all shapes, sizes and backgrounds. Through Retrodolls, I’m proud to offer not only some of the most authentic pinup experiences but also one of the most inclusive.
From this success, I’ve had the opportunity to teach retro-style shoot design all over the country.
Has it been a smooth road?
The road to where my company is today has not been an easy one. Not only do we have the usual industry issues with finding locations, selecting the right studio, and making sure everything is able to go according to plan, but the more recent obstacles like recessions and the pandemic have especially hit us hard.
However, like many other small businesses, we were able to adapt, and now we are moving forward. We believe in what we do, and while it may have taken a while, Retrodolls has found our niche.
Alright – so let’s talk business. What else should we know about you and your career so far?
Unlike other boudoir studios, we offer exclusively retro and vintage style shoots. We also take the time to get to know each client so we can offer wardrobe and set options, so their photos not only empower them but reflect them as a person as well. We design our photos with a focus on the client, not on the recipient of the finished product like other boudoir focused studios.
Behind the scenes, my team and I use our collective knowledge, skills, and expertise to build sets, source authentic vintage props, reproduction costumes and even create custom pieces to make sure everything is exactly what the client hopes for. Because of this, we’ve accumulated one of the largest wardrobes and prop inventories in the field.
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I am new to Burbank, but I’ve been really enjoying it so far.
I love that it has such a rich retro history and a deep culture in film making. I feel that adds to the authenticity of our shoot experiences. Not to mention, having an airport so close has really expanded our business since it’s easier for us to accommodate out of town clientele.
