Today we’d like to introduce you to Jason Chang.
Jason, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I started off about 10 years ago teaching private piano lessons. As a musician pursuing my dream, I found that teaching music gave me the flexibility to do what I wanted to do musically while being able to make a good living. After a while though, I had a roster of 50 some students and I started to find that my time for music was drastically threatened. That was when I decided to start Soundscape Music. I realized that having been in the music industry, I knew tons of talented musicians – guitarists, singers, drummers, horn players, bassists, you name it! So, when I heard students tell me they were quitting piano to take guitar, a light bulb went off in my head. At first, it was about matching up students to teachers that I knew were great artists and at the same time, helping out my friends who were sick ass musicians but ended up working night shifts in diners and coffee shops. From there, things just grew – albeit it took a while. I didn’t really start seeing much success until 3 years into the game but after about 5 years (circa 2014) the school began to take a life of its own. Now, 8 years later, I am amazed at where I am and where I came from. It is a true testament to the fact that anything is possible!
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It’s been a rather smooth road except for learning how to manage people and work well with others. It’s a fine line balancing respect and honoring yourself while honoring your employees and clients all at once but I am a people lover and I think that has helped a lot. People intrigue me and I find it interesting to see what makes different people tick and learning to see through the perspective of others.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Soundscape Music Studios story. Tell us more about the business.
We are a music school that specializes in in home private lessons. We have a team of talented teachers who mostly are or have been performers or part of the music industry so their passion for music goes a long way. We tailor lessons to student’s needs so things are flexible and flow well. People are different – they learn differently, have different personalities and like different things so how can you teach different people using the same methods?
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I don’t believe in luck but I do believe that through intention, belief and joy, we create our own success.
