Meet Jasmine Sanchez of Jassy’s Treats in Alhambra

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jasmine Sanchez.

Jasmine, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started about six years ago, it was my daughter’s 4th birthday and I wanted to make sugar cookies for her party. I started going on YouTube and googling how To’s for sugar cookies. I had always been crafty and I loved baking so I said what heck I could do this. I did a test run and I failed. The cookies burned and icing was all over the place it looked my four years old made them.

I keep trying so finally the day of the party I presented them, I was not a 100% happy with the result but they were at least presentable. My friends and family said they loved them. So I started making more for any occasion we had I would make them and I stayed really enjoyed making them and it was actually pretty relaxing. So I started taking them to my friend’s and families houses and they would tell me you should consider selling them and I thought to myself who is going pay me to do this? I was just having fun and it was a hobby for me. But I decided to make a cookie page on social media just so I can have place to put all my pics of my cookies, well from there my friends and family started sharing my page and before you know people I didn’t know were asking me to make cookies for them. I was really nervous about doing them because I didn’t know how I would feel if someone didn’t like my work..but I took a chance and took that 1st order. I did research on how I can sell and what I needed to do. The 1st order was done and I was excited and scared because I didn’t know person and was afraid she wouldn’t like my work but she picked them up and she loved them and by the next week she had referred to someone else and then I kept getting orders. I couldn’t believe that people loving my work and wanted to buy more.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
No, it hasn’t been smooth, working with icing is not easy and there are days when I still don’t get the right consistency or color or whatever and I have to start over. Even baking cookies are challenging the weather changes and it affects the cookie, they can spread or come out dry and trust me I burned a batch or two. Also, every order I get is different so it challenging at times to come with a design and I hope that my customers will like it. Sometimes they are thinking one thing and I’m thinking another so I have to make sure I’m on the same page design wise.

Please tell us about Jassy’s Treats.
My business is Jassy’s Treats named after my nickname Jassy. I make custom sugar cookies from home (cottage food baker). Cookies are sugar cookies with a royal icing on top and I can make almost any theme or design that you would like for any occasion…birthdays, weddings, showers, anniversaries or just because. My proudest moments are when a client picks up there order and I see their reaction. That is the best part of my job they are always thrilled and amazed by my work and that’s what makes me proud because I know I completed the job I was asked to be done. What sets me apart is that even though they are cookies, they are like mini artwork that I have done and with are you know, no two pieces are the same. Each order is unique and custom you can’t just walk into a store and buy it.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If I had start over, I wish it would started doing this a long time ago maybe when I was a little bit younger. All this had started after I had lost my mom to cancer, I would of loved her to see my work. She was the one that taught me to bake and cook and she was very crafty. I got a lot from her but she never saw me make sugar cookies.
