Meet Janet Lai, LA’s Expert in Launching Skin Care

Today we’d like to introduce you to Janet Lai.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I received my MBA from UC Irvine with a focus on brand management in 2008. Back then, I really wanted to work for big Corporate American companies because it was every ambiguous girl’s dream. After working on brands like JOICO, Johnson & Johnson, Revlon, and Ardell, I decided to venture into a new journey.

Since 2013, I have been helping entrepreneurs to launch skincare brands. They included doctors, foreign investors, new immigrants, and private equity firms. I do everything from R&D and product development to public relations and advertising. I get to manage all of the processes because most of these brands are vertically integrated. I feel very proud in every step of the process. Whether I’m creating a new prototype, a new POP display, a new marketing presentation, or receiving a new press mention, I am heavily-involved!

Recently, I’m consulting with 3 companies with a total of 7 brands. I am about to launch 2 new emerging skin care brands, 1 hair care brand and 1 pink coconut water brand. I’m trying very hard and I hope to see big results!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I am very serious about skin care and I try my best to provide top-of-the-line products for consumers. I want to make everything right from researching the latest ingredients to marketing. I challenge myself to excel in all areas so I continue taking many classes and lessons to keep myself updated with all the skill sets needed to succeed. It requires days of personal time and I have to be away from my daughters. I keep telling myself that I’m trying to be a role model as a hard-working career woman.

Please tell us about San Marino Beauty.
One of the companies that I consult with is San Marino Beauty. We specialize in distributing European brands and we also manufacture our own brands. The founder and I are currently working on creating a new skincare brand Olecea Beaute. I was involved in conceptual branding, testing ingredients and now we are ready to launch.

We are different because we are very detailed in every step of the process to ensure every drop is precious. Every raw material (ingredient) was carefully sourced in Europe and in the US. Just like cooking pasta, you can use different grades of ingredients from so many supermarkets. It’s the difference between gourmet cooking and making quick-and-easy dishes.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If I had to start over, I would have spent more time learning about cosmetics chemistry before I had my children. I have to spend quite a lot of personal time to learn more about cosmetics biochemistry and I feel bad for leaving them on weekends.
