Meet Ja’Nell Hall-Ragin of J Ragin Photography

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ja’Nell Hall-Ragin.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I am an actress first, photographer second but It has always been something special to me.

I started Photography in high-school. I remember my mother buying me a simple Nikon. I would take it everywhere, landmarks, family functions, you name it.

After a while, I fell off and fell in love with acting. In 2017, after I graduated college, my business partner lended me his camera after I convinced a friend to shoot with me.

My friend previously complained about not being able to take the proper headshot. I kept reinstating that it wasn’t her but her level of comfortability during the shoot. The shots were amazing and boom! I never looked back.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Oh, most definitely. I feel like struggles are all apart of the journey. The camera became my outlet for all of my difficult times.

The time I picked up the camera again was exactly one year since my grandfather’s death. He was more like my father and my best friend. Stepping into photography kept me grounded.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the J Ragin Photography story. Tell us more about the business.
J Ragin Photography began in 2017 after a friend needed help with the perfect headshot and I offered my services. She struggled in the past with comfortability in front of the lens. My overall objective was to make her feel comfortable and confident. My business partner let me borrow his Canon 80D and J Ragin Photography began.

Since then, I’ve worked with over 50 artists from New York and now LA. I was recently blessed with the opportunity to be a contributor for a media platform during New York Fashion Week in 2019.

I believe what sets my photography business apart is how I communicate with my clients. Photography is a passion first. After booking, I like to have a conversation either via phone or in person. I like to brainstorm with them, find their strengths and weaknesses prior to the shoot sharing Pinterest ideas and setting the overall objective. I believe when you really develop a great client to client relationship it changes the tone of the shoot and produces magic.

I also keep my prices reasonable. We Are all artist out here and if I can contribute to your future in any way, that makes the shoot dope.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I wouldn’t call it luck but blessings. I believe if you do good for others that same good will come back to you.

When I first started photography, I was more focused on collaboration than money. Crazy right? I lended my services and offered help if needed. I gave free sessions. As I progressed, I began to charge. You live and you learn. I’ve definitely had some bad encounters but the good makes it all worth it.
