Meet Jana Roemer of Practices of Self Love

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jana Roemer.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
It’s interesting to me when people ask how I got started because every single thing I have done as lead me to this moment now. I’m originally from Canada, grew up literally in the middle of nowhere. My closest neighbor was a sweaty bike ride away, so I spent a lot of time alone in nature and staring at the stars as a kid and teenager. For whatever reason, my mind always wondered to the questions of how did we get here? And why am I here?

That kind of depth as a 5-year-old it took me on wild fantasies wondering which star I came from and other times it felt like torture to be human and while the questions haven’t changed that much, the contemplations have evolved. Movement and teaching started for me as a figure skating coach when I was 12. I taught 5 and 6-year-olds. They cracked me up. I fully bought into the idea that I had to go to University and become someone and get a “real” job until that spiraled me into a depression.

Office work had me feeling like a lion trapped in a cage and I needed to get out and explore the world and move and interact with other humans and make them smile. I ignored the call to change course a moment too long, and during my Saturn return, I broke my back snowboarding which left me laying in a hospital bed for 10 solid days to contemplate what the heck I was doing with my life. That’s when I realized that the only work I can do is what sets my Soul on fire and that anything else wasn’t loving to me. I knew I had to move people, physically, mentally and spiritually.

It started as philosophy, then yoga asana, meditation, yoga nidra, astrology… basically all practices of self-love. So that’s what I do! And that’s what I’m calling my school of awakening too. The move from Canada to California was a complete surprise to me even. In 2012, I met a guy at Burningman. He was funny, hot and we hit it off through playfulness in the way that Burningman does. At the end of that Burn, I looked at him and said “If I never see you again, I am so grateful for this time together.

It’s been one of the best times of my life.” He agreed. It didn’t even take 24 hours for us to realize that it was so much more than a Playa love story. This was it. Love at first site and a whirlwind long-distance love affair that eventually had him import me to the US so we could make a life (and very quickly, a kid) together!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Definitely struggles. Yet for me, it hasn’t been a struggle to ever get a teaching job or fill a teacher training or retreat. That has all come easily.

The struggles have all been internal. I think that’s what brings to potency to my work though. Nervous energy that in the past has manifested as social anxiety, self-doubt or making choices out of alignment with my soul’s calling has spiraled me into depressions and that ongoing storyline inside my head that hasn’t always been my best friend. They all required that I do some serious Soul searching and dig inside to purify my inner world.

I’ve tried a bunch of different approaches with masters all over the world that all have their own benefits and shadows. They have all taught me so much. I teach from a place of vulnerability and raw honesty. My goal is to be as relatable as possible while dissolving judgment, both on self an others.

There’s also this never-ending curiosity about the nature of the Human mind and Spirit that keeps me asking questions and listening to stories and searching for the ones who have overcome incredible hardships to learn some of the greatest lessons.

To me, it’s our struggles that make us rich, and I wish more people could understand that too.

Practices of Self Love – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Practices of Self Love includes everything from 200 and 300 hour Yoga Teacher Trainings, Yoga Nidra trainings + intensives, international transformational retreats, new moon circles, public yoga classes, natal chart readings, online meditation courses, monthly downloadable Astro Nidras and more. It’s about to grow as well, and I can’t wait to tell about it when it’s ready!

I started running Yoga Teacher Trainings a decade ago in Canada. It wasn’t because I knew I was going to run teacher trainings, but I asked my teacher how I could stay in that room where the most beautiful unfolding and transformations happened. He told me I could come to witness the next training he was co-facilitating and then ended up having a major change of heart and left his role which forced me into the role next to his co-facilitator a little sooner than anyone thought.

Which now that I write this — that might be a pattern. The way I got into running Yoga Nidra trainings was that I invited my teacher to come to LA to run a training. We were sold out at 33 people, and six weeks before the course, she had to change her plans. It was all in good Spirit, and apparently, I was ready, but again — thrown in the fire and figured it out! I wonder what’s next!

We specialize in transformation. I say we because I swear there’s a team of Angels or some kind of support from the other side behind everything I do. And, I also work with an extraordinary woman named Sasha Bahador from time to time. We are each other’s muse in this world. Each program has its own focus.

The New Moon circles are intended to attune our lives to at the astrological support available that lunar season and get clear in our direction and goals. The public classes always have an astrological theme for a mini tune-up at the moment. It seems those classes have developed a little cult following of people who soften every time they know they are not alone in what they are going through. It’s really special. I’ve taught at a couple festivals the last two years and LOVE that environment to drop in the astrology with the yoga. People sit in tears. It’s awesome!

The Astro Nidras attune you to the Sun Season lessons and support while deeply relaxing your nervous system and catching you up on sleep. The online course with Insight Timer is to help people who struggle with obsessive thinking, which, let’s be honest — most people do from time to time.

The two hundred hour yoga teacher training is meant to get someone ready to stand in their center with confidence and ease. Most trainings are very technical with asana, alignment, and anatomy, which I think is awesome and necessary and we do include in our own feminine and flowy way. However, our trainings are focused more on removing all the blocks that prevent one from being able to love and believe in themselves. What I’ve witnessed in people is that once they love themselves in a really healthy way and believe in themselves, they are capable of anything.

The 300-hour training is a journey through the cosmos and the underworld. It’s a complete overhaul of understanding the technology of the human body. It’s not as obvious as you would think, yet once you get it, it’s the most obvious thing. We just haven’t been educated this way. My primary focus lately has been to understand the nervous system and endocrine system and how this relates to our own subconscious programs.

Once you can see the programs, you can unwind them and create new ones that are in greater support of the Soul that you know you are deep inside. People leave with a new understanding of the role their emotions play in their life, a relationship with the sacred in a way that is not woo-woo, but tangible and real. The coursework includes embodied astrology, ceremony, asana, energetic anatomy, meditation, pranayama, and it includes the Yoga Nidra training that I also do on its own.

The Yoga Nidra trainings I have said this is where the ancient meets the quantum, yet really, truly, they are a journey home to yourself. I journey inward to a feeling inside that only you can feel. This trainings allows one to touch into a sense of intimacy within that is untouchable by anyone else. When you live from that place, woah. Watch out world. Surprisingly, it’s soft and gracious and potently powerful.

What I’m most proud of as a school of awakening is that mostly everyone who does our in-depth course comes out differently on the other end. Not everyone teaches yoga, but they are more empowered to do what they choose to do. People have a new light in their eyes, fire in their passions and trust themselves at a greater capacity. They are able to hold and share more love. That is everything to me.

I think what sets us apart is that we’ve developed trainings that we wish we could have taken. We are rebels in the world of yoga, breaking rules, yet at the same time we back up a lot of what we do with science. We look for the most radical, leading-edge scientists who are dedicated to proving mystical through science and lean into their work to explain the experiences people are having.

We are also not satisfied with the intellect alone, it all has to be felt and experienced so that it’s embodied knowledge, which in essence is wisdom. And, while we do take what we do seriously, we are light-hearted and laugh a lot.

What is “success” or “successful” for you?
This is simple: Do people fall in love with themselves after working with me? Do they know and understand themselves better? Are they more content? Do they recognize the importance of being in service to each other and being a good person in this world? Are they kind?

If those are the shifts I inspire in people, I am beyond successful!
