Today we’d like to introduce you to Jammie Jelks.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Jammie. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I am a bell city kid. I was born and raised in Riverside, CA. Before graduating from Martin Luther King High School, I attended 12 different schools across So Cal and North Carolina. After high school, I went on to attend Chico State, where I got my BA in Political Science and studied Leadership.
I fell in love with the college experience and told myself I wanted to make a career out of it so I went on to study College Student Development at Bowling Green State University. I earned my masters degree and began my career as an administrator. I worked in k-12, for a couple of different colleges, and a couple of non-profit organizations throughout my time in the education field.
Working in education with youth and college students was very rewarding, but that was not IT for me. I wanted more. I wanted to do something that challenged me to build new skills and gave me the opportunity to earn more. That’s where I began my transition to real estate and mortgage.
A high school friend of mine had made the jump into real estate finance a couple of years prior and encouraged me to do the same. I did my research, consulted a few people, and then ultimately made the jump as well. To this date, still one of the best decisions I’ve made outside of marrying my wife.
Fast forward five years. I am now a Loan Officer managing his own book of business and working to close 24 million dollars in real estate transactions over the next 12 months. My goal is to expand home ownership in my community and make sure individuals and families have access to the financing they need to meet their real estate and business goals. Whether they are a first-time home buyer, a real estate investor, and small business owner, my goal is to be their lending partner for their every need.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The road has not been easy getting to where I am at now. For starters, a career change is risky. I went from a field that I somewhat mastered to a field I had ZERO experience in. There was a major learning curve I had to get over. Luckily I had a mentor and a friend that did not just WALK me through the process, but COACHED me and put me in a position to be hireable and successful. They did not just want to get me in the door, they made sure once I was in, I knew what I was doing and was a top producer.
Another challenge that came about more recently is financial. When I ventured off and established jelksMBA, I left a job paying me $90k a year to start a business as a loan officer. I no longer had the luxury of a guaranteed salary. I was now 100% commission. Meaning, if I do not close loans and get people in homes, I make ZERO dollars. That is pressured applied, especially when you have a wife and new baby boy to care for. Luckily for me, my wife encouraged me to start the business and continues to support me throughout the business development process. In addition, I have established a great network of referral partners, including local real estate agents, and have a great marketing machine behind me that is feeding me business on a daily basis.
Challenges and obstacles are a reality. Sometimes they come when we least expect them, but their meir existence should not come as a surprise. So with that, as entrepreneurs we have to prepare ourselves for them. We need to plan and prepare well and ensure our businesses are well leveraged with the support and resources we need to build and sustain profitable businesses.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the JelksMBA story. Tell us more about the business.
I am an independent mortgage broker. I originate both residential and commercial loans throughout California and am now expanding to Arizona, Georgia, Maryland, Pennsylvania and Florida.
As a broker, I offer several different loan programs that are aimed at making sure as many people possible have access to the financing they need. I specialize in first-time homebuyers, real estate investors, small business owners, and those who have not-so great credit history.
At the end of the day, I want my social impact to be expanding economic opportunities for all who are interested and hungry to succeed.
I want people to know that owning a home, investing in real estate, and having a successful business are all attainable and I am here to help those dreams become realities.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
For me, it is not luck, it is grace. It is by grace I have been put in a position to be successful. I have been graced with a loving wife to support my business. I have been graced with a platform that allowed me to establish a business. I have been graced with a network that supports my business. It is by grace that any of this is possible. For me to think it was anything other than grace, would be a slap in the face of the one who has extended the grace. I recognize and acknowledge who my source is, the limits of my education, skills and talents and how graced has sustained me over time.
I do not believe in luck, I believe in planning, executing and the grace that steps in when you have fallen short.
