Meet Jamie Savarese and Isabel Sherman of Wild Letters

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jamie Savarese and Isabel Sherman.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Jamie and Isabel. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
The idea for Wild Letters came together in the summer of 2018. We (co-founders Jamie Savarese and Isabel Sherman) were Hollywood assistants at the time and wanted to be able to take ownership of something tangible in our professional lives. We both absolutely love being in the entertainment industry, but at times, being an assistant has its downsides.

First and foremost because as an assistant you are working on behalf of another person instead of for yourself. So one fateful day in July 2018 we brainstormed ideas on what we could do to find ownership in our lives. We had always dreamed of creating a female-centered production company, but we had no idea how we would be able to fund that venture on our minimal assistant salaries.

We decided to start with the basics and figure out how, financially, we could get there in our future. We decided on manufacturing and creating a private label product that could one day help fund our storytelling aspirations and provide a little bit of inspiration for the women we want to target, along the way. The idea for letter boards came because we wanted to establish a platform for women to speak – in the simplest way.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Starting a small business is difficult, and if anyone says anything differently, they’re most likely not telling you the full truth. There are moments of success and moments of failure. Frustration becomes a constant and sometimes it’s hard to see the light at the end of the tunnel. But at the end of the day, the successes are so incredibly worth it because you get to turn to yourself and say, “Hey – look, you can do this!” No matter how much preparation you do you will never be fully prepared for what is to come. We initially started as an Amazon business, which has its own unique problems of navigating ranking for individually keywords, learning PPC and optimizing your listing.

There is a lot that goes into the Amazon algorithm and becoming a successful business on its platform. But beyond that, there are numerous logistical tasks that need to be handled to even form a business. One struggle we faced was originally we named our company Opia LLC. As time progressed, we realized that we wanted to legally be known as Wild Letters. We then had to file a DBA because changing an LLC is a whole separate complication.

We rushed into a name because we were trying to run through our “forming a business” checklist, but by doing so it caused us more complications in the long run. We would suggest taking your time with decisions – don’t jump into anything. With that said, it is inevitable that problems will arise, especially in the start, and you can’t sit and dwell on every mistake that you’ve made, but instead, move forward and try to prevent them in the future. Just remember that everything is a learning experience.

Please tell us about your business. What should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
We are a letter board company that primarily sells off the Amazon marketplace. We are known for our stylish vibrant packaging and our wooden letter organizer (designed by Wild Letters and the only one of its kind on the Amazon marketplace!) Our product is the perfect gift for family and friends of all ages.

Our brand is hip and sleek – we like to think of ourselves as being the luxurious letter board creators. We are extremely proud of our outstanding reviews. One of our Amazon customers actually said, “I was skeptical of the number of glowing reviews but this far exceeded my expectations.” It is an oddity on the Amazon seller platform to have so many five-star reviews and we are so happy that our product has taken off the way it has.

What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
This answer seems so simple, but what makes us most proud is knowing that our product is adding a little joy to people’s lives. We get a lot of messages via Instagram/email from our customers who are using our boards to celebrate important milestones, leave messages for their partners or simply using it as a toy with their kids.

I think it’s so rare that a company is able to sell a product that promotes self-expression and happiness – we are thankful that we are lucky enough to have one that does. We will never forget our first customer who tagged us in an Instagram photo. We remember turning to each other and saying, “that’s our board – I can’t believe it.” There’s this unexplainable feeling that washes over you when you realize that you’ve impacted someone you’ve never even met. It’s a beautiful thing.
