Today we’d like to introduce you to Jamie Royer.
Jamie, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I grew up boating with family in Southern California on the Pacific Ocean and western lakes and rivers. The love of all things nautical was instilled from the early days of sitting on dad’s lap driving a boat. After earning a Captains License in 2010, I began teaching sailing and power boating in Long Beach and across the country at boat shows (American Sailing Association).
Sailing is my passion, but I have experience in operating hundreds of types of watercraft and love anything that gets you out on the water. My wife and I started Sunglow Charters in 2015 with three boats and a primary focus on teaching people to sail and operate their own powerboats with confidence… We also take out many “touristy” trips and champagne cruises around the harbor.
We now teach to a newly developed standard of sailing designed to get more people out on the water with safety and simplicity in mind. (American National Standard- 2017)
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Of course not! I worked for a sailing company for five years that ended up going out of business and almost took me down with it, but I learned a lot from their failure. Starting our own company proved tricky for sure. Business Licenses in Downtown, slip fees and insurance are very expensive.
Another company has tried to block my growth probably because they are afraid of competition and want to control our area. Like most businesses finding good employees can be a real challenge.
Please tell us about Sunglow Sailing Charters.
We teach people how to operate sail and power vessels with confidence and control.
Whether it is on one of our vessels, or on theirs our goal is to bring safe boating to more people in Southern California. We are a small company, so we are able to provide more one-on-one time and work more closely with our customers.
We are most proud of our friendly approach and basic approach to safe vessel operation.
Our Downtown Long Beach location is perfect for boating. The federal breakwater creates a huge bay that is well protected from ocean swells and provides beautiful training grounds.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Driving or skiing behind my grandfathers 18′ ski boat with my family and friends.
