Meet Jamia Scranton of Curate Life and Mia’s Fit Prep in DTLA and South Bay

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jamia Scranton.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Jamia. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Born and raised in a small town called Lancaster, I knew there was more to life than getting comfortable and staying with my parents in what we call “the desert” and working at the Antelope Valley Mall. I’ve always been independent, ambitious, motivated, and flat outa hustlaaaa. From selling all sorts of candy all through grade school, supporting myself through college, to starting multiple businesses while maintaining my full-time career…. I’ve been in it to win it!

I made it a point to leave Lancaster after graduating from high school at the age of 17 and went off to college. I attended Cal State University Dominguez Hills, one of the most prestigious diverse universities in California and close to Los Angeles where I wanted to pursue a modeling career while attending school. Despite the many distractions of campus life and my extracurricular involvement, I graduatedCum Laude with a Bachelors Degree in Business Administration with an emphasis in Human Resource Management and minor in Africana Studies.

While in college I was heavily involved on-campus living in the dorms, being apart of the dance team, and President of the Black Student Union where I was able to build my professional network and also create life long friendships. I also worked my way through college consistently having a job and booking fashion modeling gigs to pay for tuition and rent. College was an eye-opener (coming from a super religious background and overprotective parents) that provided me with unforgettable experiences, cultural awareness and independent development I didn’t have before that I am truly grateful to have received from those college days.

After graduation, I was blessed to find a full-time job in my field of Human Resources working for a prestigious global accounting firm for almost four years. Through this career, I was able to fund my hobby of domestic and international travel. My first international trip was to the Bahamas and Grand Turk with some of my closest friends. From that trip, it was only up from there visiting and experiencing countries all around the world from the United Arab Emirates to Europe, Asia, Mexico and more. I was intrigued with filling my passport with as many stamps as possible. I found myself the most happiest and fulfilled when I was traveling.

In between travel and work, I maintained a healthy lifestyle by working out five times a week and meal prepping for myself on Sundays for the entire week. I would post most of my travel adventures, workouts, and meal prep process on my main Instagram social media account. Soon enough my love for traveling and cooking became a hot topic of inspirational discussion amongst my friends and family. From the buzz, a lot of my friends and family mentioned that I should start a meal prep business. During this busy period in my life, I found myself tossing the idea around in my head, as well as doubting myself and my capabilities, thinking of ways to make more money doing what I actually love, and soul searching for my true purpose in life.

I believe that the greatest and most important adventure of our lives is discovering who we are, what brings us the most joy, and our purpose here on earth. I’ve always had a passion for traveling, fitness, healthy eating, cooking, making money, and giving back to others. I discovered my true purpose in life from my experiences after college working full-time at a firm I wasn’t truly happy at, developing true self-love, and putting my happiness first. I decided to turn my passions into reality. I knew that working a 9 to 5 wasn’t what I wanted to do for the rest of my life and I had a strong desire to be my own boss. With that, I knew that I had to spring into action and start planning for my entrepreneurial journey. I knew I had investments, sacrifices, long days and nights, hard work, and dedication ahead of me but I was mentally and physically prepared to go all in to see the success I wanted for my future.

In 2017, after lots of research, strategizing, creating a business plan, and consistent encouragement from my friends and family I launched a meal prep service called Mia’s Fit Prep that provides tasty and healthy meals catered to my client’s fitness goals. In 2018, I teamed up with two of my college friends and curated a travel business called Curate Life LLC dedicated to the planning of group travel and personalized trips without breaking the bank and making travel dreams a reality. Both of these businesses were a start to my dream of being my own boss and ultimately long term goal of no longer working under someone. Through these businesses and my personal experiences, I wanted to encourage, inspire, and motivate others that whatever they want they can have.

Over the past two years, I have had the opportunity to help my clients reach their fitness goals by providing them consistent weekly meal preps, meal plans, and workout tips. The most gratifying part of cooking healthy meals for others is hearing from my clients how good the food taste and how they are seeing results leading them to meet their personal fitness and health goals from the meals.

In August 2019 after many planning sessions and heavy promotion, my team and I hosted our first all-inclusive international 5-day group trip to Costa Rica with 32 attendees. It was exciting to meet new people from all walks of life and hearing from some that Costa Rica was their first international trip. We even had attendees who came solo! That’s what it’s all about you know, encouraging people to step out of their comfort zone within their city walls and getting out to experience the world, immersing in all different cultures, We look forward to creating new experiences for others in 2020 and beyond with planned group destinations to Amsterdam, Singapore, Brazil, Greece, Toronto and Africa to name a few. We also curate personalized trips for clients to various destinations.

They say nothing worth having in life comes easy, right? Hard work, long nights, early mornings, lots of praying and talking to God, self-motivation, determination, humbleness, sacrifices, the desire to be successful, and dedication has got me where I am today. I have a long way to go and I’m not satisfied just yet but I’m definitely proud of myself.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Yes and no! There have been highs and lows, bumps, roadblocks, alternate routes, and U-turns in this entrepreneurial journey. Seems like the easiest part in this journey was the initial thought of the idea of starting a business, from there is the execution process and in no way shape or form is that smooth all the time. One of my biggest struggles is juggling a full-time job in management for a Fortune 500 billion-dollar company while maintaining and growing my personal businesses.

I had to get myself out of the mentality of looking at my businesses as “side businesses” for an additional source of income and had to start treating them like full-time jobs as a future MAIN source of income. One of my business partners always reminds us during our weekly meetings that if we plan on this business taking us out of working our 9 to 5 careers in the next few years we have to start putting in the work like this is our top priority in order for this business to excel and be successful.

Curate Life and Mia’s Fit Prep – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
To focus in on one of my businesses, I am the co-owner of Curate Life LLC, a company that specializes in curating domestic and international group travel experiences for individuals that aspire to travel and explore the world, may not have anyone to travel with, have a desire to meet new people, and/or those that enjoy the adventurous side of life. With each trip, we aim to include experiences that will forever be embedded in your memories, whether that’s zip-lining or ATV riding through Costa Rican rainforests, visiting historical sites in Europe, relaxing on an island beach getaway, or trying new foods in Asia. No matter the adventure, we aim to provide you with an experience of a lifetime at an AFFORDABLE price.

Keyword AFFORDABILITY! Our unbeatable group package deals, our focus on a unique top-notch client experience, efforts in diversity, additional service of personalized trips, as well as special retreat offerings sets us apart from others. A personal win for me in 2019 with Curate Life is the success we had with our first international group trip. Not only did we have a large number of attendees that exceeded beyond our initial goal but we were able to provide each and every attendee with an amazing memorable experience. Our attendees came on the trip as strangers and left as lifelong friends. The positive feedback we received from the attendees and those back home who watched our IG stories during the trip made me extremely proud of the effort and hard work my team and I put in for others to experience the world of travel like we have had the opportunity to experience over the years.

What was my favorite childhood memory?
My favorite childhood memory is going on a ten day Black College Tour in high school visiting Historical Black College Universities (HBCU) and historic monuments across the South starting in Pennsylvania and working all the way down to Mississippi with about 20 other high school students from all across the United States.

It was an amazing opportunity to visit and learn about black history through all of the prestigious HBCUs. I also enjoyed traveling to all those southern states, eating good food, and meeting new people from all over America and keeping in touch with some of them to this very day. It was that very trip that I realized my love for traveling, experiencing places I only dreamed of and meeting new people along the way.
