Meet James Watson of Komputers 4 R Kids

Today we’d like to introduce you to James Watson.

There was a time not long ago when computers were not so common in a household.

Beginning at the turn of the new Millennium, computing power was still shrinking as well as out-performing itself every year; yet still maintained a high price tag in retail shops.

Along with this, many schools throughout the United States require and teach
basic computer literacy to their students, in order to enable success for them in their futures.

Although, not every family can afford the high price of a home desktop. This led to more students not having access to educational technology. Fortunately, many individuals would come together to address this problem.

Wanting to create something great, James Watson founded Komputers 4 R Kids in 2005.

Komputers 4 R Kids is a Non-profit Organization dedicated to providing low-cost, or free, desktop computers to low-income students and families.

Starting in his garage, he refurbished old systems and provided them to individuals who needed them most. As time continued, Mr. Watson found himself in small warehouses where K4RK would eventually thrive. Between 2007 and 2013 Komputers 4 R Kids provided thousands of refurbished computers to Students, Schools, and individuals across Southern California. Komputers 4 R Kids provided many opportunities for its community of volunteers and dedicated workers.

As of now, Komputers 4 R Kids is operated by a team of young students dedicated to continuing the mission and providing affordable services to their community and surrounding Southern California area.

Has it been a smooth road?
There are always struggles in any growing company. Having to maintain overhead expenses as well as giving away equipment to those who need it isn’t a simple task. Along with this, there are many issues in the refurbishment process such as: Making sure the equipment is in working condition, is there enough equipment to make a complete set, or making sure donors data is erased thoroughly.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Komputers 4 R Kids accepts donated used computer equipment, regardless of working condition.

We are unique because we accomplish a number of tasks that benefit the community and the environment.

We provide low cost computer equipment to students and families, which enables these groups access to educational information online. We also offer our location as a drop off for e-waste for the general public, which also keeps one less computer out of a landfill, thus keeping the environment a little greener. Furthermore, K4RK offers low cost computer repair and related services compared to retails such as GeekSquad or other local repair shops.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Los Angeles and its surrounding cities is full giving-businesses and receiving-schools that allow organizations like ours to exist! If you tried to provide such a service in a low populated or rural area, it wouldn’t be as successful at its task. Although, we have never branched out nationwide or globally, which is obviously the next step for any related organization.
