Today we’d like to introduce you to James Michael Perez.
James Michael, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I was born and raised in a small border town in south Texas called Weslaco. Being a creative type growing up made me a black sheep for the most part. Fortunately, I had little sisters and I would glam them up for their ballet recitals in my teen years just for fun but never thought it could be a career. Makeup, fashion and art have always intrigued me but it is was makeup that brought the artistic passion out of me and brought me out to LA ten years ago. I’m still on the stepping stones of pursuing my dreams and establishing a name for myself in the beauty industry. I’ve had the opportunity to work with some amazing people such as Paris Hilton, Janet Jackson, Fifth Harmony, Jessica Alba, Lisa Rinna. I can’t wait to see what else my artistic future has in store for me.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I believe the road is as smooth as you make it. There’s always going to be setbacks in this industry. There’s always going to be jobs you’re passed up on and someone on your heels reaching for the same goals. For me, it’s been ridding my brain of the self-doubt and realizing I’ve made it this far already. Training my mind and thought process to stay creative and keep pushing my innovation forward regardless of the competitive chaos that constantly surrounds us.
Alright – so let’s talk business. What else should we know about you and your career so far?
As a freelance Makeup artist, I’m allowed to choose my clientele. I’m able to choose jobs that will bring out the artist in me without questioning the creative process. I have no specific esthetic. Makeup is an art form of its own and everyone’s interpretation of beauty will be different. With my work, I like to instill a feeling of beauty beauty and unspoken confidence on my canvas and I believe that’s what I’m most known for.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I feel believing in yourself and not letting self-doubt pollute your mind and creative process is probably the most important thing for an artist to live by in order to reach their fullest potential. Once an artist knows who they are and what their work invokes in people does success truly follows.
