Meet James Lau of New Media Pictures

Today we’d like to introduce you to James Lau.

James, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I pretty much started my photography journey as a hobbyist. My earlier images mostly were landscape, nature, wildlife and street photography of people. From time to time I would capture images for friends and relatives at their events. People would describe my photographs has a photo journalistic element to them.

Fast forward, my husband retired a few years and was looking into setting up the garage for portrait photography for friends and family…as a hobby. From the moment I took my first portrait shot of our friends in our garage, everything was history! What I didn’t expect and what I love about portraiture photography is the trust and connection you have to build between you and the clients in a very short time. Once the relationship is built, magic shows up in the images.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I think one of the biggest challenges was/is that I have a very demanding full-time job. There’s just not enough not hours left in a day. It’s not uncommonly that I would work on the photography business until 11 to 12 at night and get up at 5:30 the next day for my “day job”.

In addition, there were so much I had to and continue to learn! Other than being a photographer, I pretty much had to learn all aspects of the business. Advertising, social media, pricing, sales strategy, legal aspects like business license and IRS. The other struggle was that I’ve never done too much post processing before I started the business. That was a steep learning curve.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about New Media Pictures – what should we know?
We specialize in portraiture photography, high school seniors, children, and family. We also offer full photo booth services for corporate, personal and holiday events.

I’m really proud of the customer experience we provide to our clients. From the oven the initial consultation to the actual photo shoot to the product delivery. We strongly believe the trust and connection with our clients early on in the process is crucial to the produce natural and great images.

Whether from a mini-shoot for a young child or a 3-hour photo booth engagement, my husband and I are involved every step of the way.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
First and foremost, a big THANK YOU to my family!

My husband’s encouragement and behind-the-scenes assistance were invaluable! Whether I need a second option on my approaches, to location scouting, to technical explanation, he’s ALWAYS there for me. Also, our two amazing sons. They have helped me on so many job assignments, from keeping the kids entertained while I’m photographing the parents to carrying heavy gear on beach portrait shoots to getting the crowd in the mood for photo booth engagements. I feel so fortunate to have such awesome and supportive family.

I also have to thank all my friends and church families for supporting the business when I first started. They are definitely my biggest supporters and cheerleaders! Especially one of my best friend Frank. He’s really been my mentor, inspiration and cheerleader.

Last but not least, of course, my clients! Not only I would like to thank them for supporting my business, but most of all, I would like to thank them for making me believe in myself!
