Meet James Lanza of Lanza Fitness Personal Training in Chatsworth

Today we’d like to introduce you to James Lanza.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
With an extensive background in Biomechanics, Kinesiology, Sports Physiology, Massage Therapy and Nutrition, James Lanza, C.P.F.I. has been helping his clients achieve their goals through proper resistance training, body sculpting, cardio-respiratory activity, therapeutic massage and a sound eating strategy. With over twenty years of experience in the health club industry, James has been a dedicated Fitness Professional having only the highest standards for optimal results. He is involved in community actives and donates his time, effort and fitness expertise to charitable organizations.

James Lanza spent his High School and College years on the east Coast as a state champion wrestler, along with baseball, football and track and field activities. He has spent many years coaching and instructing everyone from youngsters to adults, business people, moms and dads and retirees on proper resistance training, sports specific training, core balance and training for daily functional activity.

At his training facility in Chatsworth, CA. he designs a fitness program specially tailored for each individual based on individual goals, fitness levels, rehabilitative needs or specific interests. By personalizing a workout for each individual, James is able to combine proper form and technique thereby preventing injury while improving muscle tone, increase in bone mineral density, improvement in muscular endurance and improvement in strength and balance. By training correctly, he is also able to help decrease blood pressure while improving cholesterol levels, immune system, heart function and elevation of mood.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
I opened my first club in 2001 in Northridge, CA. In 2005, I had grown my clientele to the point I needed a larger space. In 2005, I opened a second facility to accommodate the growth. The road was smooth until the economy crashed in 2007. I lost more than half of my clients. I had 19 trainers working with me and I lost more the half of them. In 2010 I closed that club and downsized to a smaller facility. In 2012 I closed that club and moved into a commercial gym where I paid the cost for my clients to have a membership and I paid a rental fee to have the opportunity to train my clients at the gym. In 2016, that gym lost their lease and we were forced into a facility that was not conducive to client safety, welfare or health. In March of 2016, I reopened my facility under my own name, (again and for the last time) and I am now thriving.

I’ve been working with James for over 8 years…after having had several other trainers since I began my formal fitness journey around 1989. He is very knowledgeable and professional. He works with his clients to determine their goals and develops the strategies that work! The gym provides a very supportive environment; the clients represent a broad age range yet everyone works well together without feeling intimidated.
