Today we’d like to introduce you to James Cullen Bressack.
James, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
At the age of 18, with a dream and determination of being the next Quentin Tarantino or Robert Rodriguez, I made my first movie. I had heard the stories of Robert Rodriguez making his first film for $7,000, so I decided I had to find $7,000 to make my first film.
Straight out of high school I found the money and hit the ground running and made my first film MY PURE JOY. It wasn’t very good, but it was pretty much my film school. I did almost every job on that film, including operating a boom while directing.
From there, I have continued working on films, working harder and building bigger budgets and perfecting my craft. To date, I have directed 15 feature films and produced 48. Always looking to make bigger and better films.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It has not always been a smooth road. Every film has its challenges, but one thing I have always worked towards is rising to the occasion. Every time I make a movie it has to be better than the last in every way, I have to one up myself every time.
We’d love to hear more about what you do.
My business is making films. I have worked with many different production companies and pride myself on going above and beyond for the films I’m involved with. It’s important to work as hard as you can on a film at all times because it is forever.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Luck is where opportunity meets preparation. If you stay prepared and you get an opportunity, you will have a lucky outcome.
