Meet Jamal Young of van Jamme in Ladera Heights and Long Beach

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jamal Young.

Jamal, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started making music when I got to college at the University of Arizona. I found myself alone & unlike the others around me most of the time, so the music I found during that time became my company. About two years into getting my feet into the process of making music I did my first show back home in LA & the rest is history. Music has been the main focus ever since.

In high school, I was big into sports & had plans to play in college, but I chose the scholastic route instead. But all through my adolescence creativity was at the forefront. I took every art class I could in school, I dabbled in piano & guitar & have always had a passion for drawing, even to this day. My dad is an actor & all-around artist, so I probably get it from him.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It has definitely not been the smoothest road. But at the same time what journey worth having isn’t?

I’ve learned A LOT along the way — many a pitfalls, triumphs & heartaches. I’ve dealt with Loss of money, dealing with mental struggles & the lack of knowledge in many areas.

I think the toughest to deal with is the lack of knowledge. I believe not knowing plays a huge role in the ease of someone’s road. The more you know, the easier your path becomes.

In the beginning, I didn’t know how to record, didn’t know how to get my music to the right people/places. Didn’t understand quality in music, didn’t understand project concepts, work ethic on the craft, etc. there was a ton that I had to learn & take bumps along the way to get to where I am now.

Please tell us about van Jamme.
Well, my music is what I’m best known for. Like I said before, I’ve been making music since I was 18 & have really grown as a person & artist. All my music is under my artist name van Jamme & have music on all platforms. I record all my music at my home studio, write all my own lyrics & conceptualize all my own content all the way down to march & album artwork.

Just last year my brother (Kahlil Amani), my friend (Amon) & myself started our own label BYWAYofUS & have been releasing the majority of our music under our label umbrella. We have performed in multiple cities spanning from LA to San Diego.

I think what sets my music apart is the content & experience it brings. I am by no means a gangster or drug dealer, so my perspective & insight I have to provide is something I have grown to appreciate & believe is important for people to hear. I pride myself on providing the most immersive live performances so the audience can really feel the idea of stepping into my world of escaping into the world we choose to create.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
LOL. If I had to start over, I would start al the way back to elementary school, in 2nd grade, & I would send my 7-year-old self a cryptic message to not stop playing the piano! haha

But for my 18-year-old self, I would tell him to believe & love himself & work at it every day. I would also tell him to network more & take a bigger step out of his comfort zone.
