Meet Jamaal Brown of Black365 in Palmdale

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jamaal Brown.

Jamaal, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Like countless other young African American students in high school, my plans for the future were unfocused. I saw the roles for myself and others like me limited to being: an athlete, drug-dealer, gang member or entertainer. I chose to pursue basketball as my ticket to fame, fortune and a better life for his family. However, unfortunately (or fortunately) these aspirations were dismissed when I was diagnosed with a rare heart condition and told he could never play basketball again.

Thankfully, while in high school, I was exposed to books and information that aided me in gaining a better knowledge of myself and the contributions of people like me throughout history. In the year 2000, I graduated as Lancaster High School’s first-ever African American Valedictorian. I was accepted to eight universities and received approximately $50,000 in scholarships.

Today, I am a speaker and the CEO of the Greenwood, Archer and Pine Foundation, a non-profit that promotes culturally-relevant education and scholarship. For the past 11 years, I have published one the nation’s top daily Black History facts calendars. The Black365 Calendar, found at www.Black365.US highlights an event in Black History every day. In 2019 my company added two editions of Black History Cards and a Black History book to what we offer. They all can be found at The crown jewel of what we do is the Black365 Knowledge Bowl. The Knowledge Bowl is a Jeopardy-style Black History quiz competition where teams of students face off against one another while answering a series of Black History questions for trophies and prizes. We have provided more than $30,000 in scholarship funds to the more than 200 students who have participated in our Knowledge Bowls. Find out more at

Additionally, my team and I recognized that the heros and sheros in Hispanic History do not receive their just accolades. So, in 2018, we created the world’s first, and only, 365 Days of Hispanic Heritage Calendar. This unique teaching tool can be found at We have partnered with a number of school districts and now provide Latino Knowledge Bowls as well!

Lastly, I am a professionally trained public speaker. I blend my life experiences, which include enduring heart surgery in high school, studying in Africa for fifteen days on an educational tour, and more than 20 years of Black History scholarship into a variety of presentations.

Has it been a smooth road?
One year I did not have the funds to produce the calendar. I had a number of long-time customers, fans, and friends who would not let me quit, give up, or even take a year off. So, I had to borrow the funds from my cousin in order to make it through. I am happy to say that I paid him back (with interest) and the 2020 edition of the Black365 Calendar represents the is the 11th consecutive year of our calendar being produced.

There were naysayers along the way that attempted to discourage me from starting the Black365 Knowledge Bowl. They said things like, “who wants to learn about Black History,” “who told you to create that?” You need a large team to pull something like that off. I am happy that I did not listen to the negative talk. For ten straight years now, elementary, junior high and college students answered 101 questions in Black History for trophies, prizes, medals and scholarships!

We’d love to hear more about your business.
