Meet Jair Contreras of Gods¢hild in Norwalk

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jair Contreras.

Jair, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Growing up, I was exposed to various styles of music particularly from my parents. Although they were never musicians, they always had music playing in our household, which contributed to my love of music. At an early age, I was exposed to everything from pop, rock, jazz, folk, funk, hip-hop, and soul music among others. I always wanted to learn how to play an instrument but never got the opportunity growing up. When I was about 16 years old, my childhood friend and I purchased an early version of FL Studio and began producing and recording our own music. With the lack of knowledge of music production and recording, you can only imagine what our early recordings sounded like. But we had fun nonetheless.

After I graduated High School and received my Associate’s Degree in a completely unrelated field, I suddenly had the itch to study and make music again. That is when I began to study Audio Production and received my Bachelor’s Degree from The Art Institute. It is at this point where I began to hone my skills as a producer and studied both the technical side and the creative side of music. I purchased various instruments and dedicated my time and energy to learning each one as best as I could. To this day, my daily goal is to learn something new about music. Whether it is a new lick, music theory concept, mixing technique, or experimenting with different sounds, I have to feel like I am getting better each and every day.

So after graduating, I began working in Palm Springs, California as an Audio/Video technician and this is where I met Kevin Johnson, also known as KVR. Our shared love of music brought us together and we eventually began making music together. We started our band named Szupernova and within four months, we released our first EP called The Big Bang EP. We also began doing shows from the desert to LA and started our own label/collective called Gods¢hild. At the moment, our label consists of myself, KVR, K. Shanae, and I$i$. We have now settled in Los Angeles, where we look to make a name for ourselves in the big city. Our hard work has brought us great opportunities and we look forward to what the future holds.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
NO. The road that has brought me to where I am now consisted of a lot of self-doubt, doubt from the people surrounding me, lack of motivation, the loss of my mentor and father figure, mental health battles with depression and anxiety, and personal demons such as my battle with alcoholism. These things nearly destroyed me and kept me from going after my dreams. After years and years of feeling stuck, drinking my life away, and feeling like I will never get to the place where I want to be, I finally decided to take control of my life, put down the bottle for good and work day and night on becoming a better person each and everyday. I began focusing on my mental health, physical health, developing my knowledge and wisdom and working hard on my music everyday, As soon as I began to set daily goals for myself and achieving them, my confidence and self-love improved tremendously. I was improving on all aspects of my life and I soon began to notice opportunities fall onto my lap. This is when Kevin and I reconnected and through our hard work, we have accomplished more than I could have ever imagined. This Halloween I will be a year sober and it is amazing to me how much my life has changed in such a short amount of time.

Through my worst moments, the only thing that was consistently there for me was music. It got me through the loss of my mentor and father figure, loss of the people that gave up on me lost loves, stress, anxiety, depression and it has also made me feel like I can take on the world. To me, music is the most powerful and beautiful substance we have, which is why I work hard everyday to improve as a musician, producer, and artist. The most wonderful thing that a person can tell me is that my music got them through a moment in their life where they felt helpless and unsure. Through those words, I will know that I have done my job and I will be determined to continue to do so.

Please tell us about Gods¢hild.
In our business, I am mostly the producer. I also play guitar, keyboard, and bass for our band Szupernova, I love being a part of the creative process as much as I can, whether it is writing, producing, recording and mixing for every project that we take on. I am mostly involved in the music process while Kevin handles the business side, but I do try to help on both aspects as much as I can.

I am proud of everything that we have been able to accomplish! Like I mentioned before, it has not been an easy road and I am one of the lucky ones. I never take it for granted and as long as I am able to create, I am the happiest man in the world. I am proud of each and everyone on our team and look forward to our upcoming releases from I$i$, K. Shanae, KVR, and my solo project as well. We have the best support from the people both inside and outside of our team and I am so excited to see what the future holds for us.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I always wished that I studied and played music at as much younger age. A reason that I always doubted myself was because I felt that I had to have a certain skill level to succeed, which I felt was impossible to achieve when I started making music. But I soon realized that it all comes down to how much work you are willing to put in to get to where you want to be.

Of course, there are many things that I wish I could have done differently, especially during my personal battles, but I feel like they made me who I am today, I now have story I can tell that can possibly help others in some way. Good things come together at the right time and I am happy where I am in my life today,
