Meet Jaimelene Salgado of Happymess Denim in Oxnard,CA

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jaimelene Salgado.

Jaimelene, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I am 22 years young and have lived in Oxnard, California my entire life. For those not local, this is about 30 or so miles from Malibu and Santa Barbara. Right in-between two well-known cities, Oxnard is a small, amazing, talented, & beautiful city! My roots and surroundings have inspired my life and business.

I started what was called “ Happymess Creations “ back in high school. My sophomore year, 2013 at Hueneme High. It was started by a purchase I had made at a well known, high-end store. I was planning on a cute new outfit for the famous Ventura County Fair. I paid $80! For one pair of simple, Levi denim shorts. Never again!

After that, I put my creative mind into something that would soon enough be more than a simple hobby! I was inspired by repurposing denim. A quick fact, between growing, dying, washing & treating cotton, it takes nearly 11,000 liters of water to produce one single pair of denim jeans! Crazy! Which is why what I do means so much!

My heart is so full knowing by each pair of denim jeans I renew & redesign, we are in a way, small or large, helping the environment & more!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
My experience with my small business has been a roller coaster… many up’s and an equal amount of downs (if not more). I would love to say it’s been quite the amazing journey with all things beneficial but in all honesty that would be a lie. Having the courage and motive to start your own small business is a huge thing!

And although it may sound simple and easily achievable, there’s way more to it. One of the largest struggles for myself was continuing the positivity and motivation in my ideas and business. I love to refer to this popular meme or picture floating around the internet.

It’s a good example of what thoughts roam a day in the life of an entrepreneur. One minute I’m extremely motivated and positive in all my dreams with my small business and the next I’m contemplating whether my decisions were the best options for myself or if it is all worth it.

Overall, I am genuinely happy to be able to express my ideas and grow an empire with what I do. Although there are other challenges, I will continue to strive for greatness in all aspects of my business because it makes me happy.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Happiness Denim – what should we know?
Each and every item you see on my website is hand-picked. All items are thrifted locally! Which allows every denim piece to represent itself and itself only. The uniqueness behind that idea is also a huge representation of the US. We all have our own little aspects within ourselves, wide hips, small waist, discoloration, flaws, beauties, & more.

From the moment an item is picked, purchased, distressed, studded, bleached, washed, photographed, and uploaded to the website & then later purchased… It is entirely made with love! By me. As a brand, I am most proud of representing women and men of all aspects.

I use raw and true models and carry sizes 00-18+ but can customize any size. I find that being unfiltered and relatable makes my brand stand out. The thing that sets Happymess Denim apart from others is the quality products with affordable prices.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
One of my main inspirations is my mother, Maria. From the beginning she has always and continues to support my small hobby and is always encouraging me to expand and create as much as I’d like.. I am so thankful for having such a supportive stand from family.

I have encountered many positive souls along the way, one of them being Amber. She encouraged me to attend my first pop up shop which opened up many doors for me. After my first event, I was inspired to continue events and pop up’s and have grown so much from them.

Most of all, credit is due to all of the beautiful people who believe and continue to support me. I have sold over 1,000 pairs of denim, and to this day, I am learning, growing, and moving forward with my small brand. I would have never made it this far without all of the people who have purchased from me, shared on social media, and believed in me. For that, I a forever thankful.
